Wow. That story is amazing. I remember the kick too
It is strange how the world works. Prob normality for colombian lifestyle but stuff of film and tv for us. Well mr huigita. I remember you well and you did bring joy! 👍

{Ed001's Note - it is only really a small part of his story to be honest. I had to chop out loads to keep the article at a manageable length.}

Good read Ed. Didn't realise he was such a colourful character! Cheers. MM

{Ed001's Note - he is fascinating mate, there is so much more to him as well. Glad you enjoyed MM, nice to do something that isn't just Premier League related to be honest.}

Directly linked to ties with Pablo Escobar and the Colombian cartel. Also, the scorpion kick didn't matter because the ref had already blown his whistle. The game had already been stopped when he did the scorpion kick.

{Ed001's Note - both are mentioned in the article. The guy grew up with Escobar, a lot of the locals saw the guy as some kind of modern day Robin Hood because he did things for the local community such as provide electricity and housing with running water etc. The corrupt government was worse and did nothing for the people so they looked elsewhere. Unfortunately, when you come from extreme poverty, the only way out of it is usually drugs. Higuita was lucky he could play footie. You can choose to judge others, but you don't know the half of what they have gone through to end up as they are.}

werent the Columbian team getting death threats from drug lords around the same time as well? i vaguely remember them being afraid to fly home after their exit from one tournament. i'd like to see more of these articles - some legends from the 90s would be great - Batistuta, Scillachi (sp) , Voller, Van Basten etc would be awesome - like you say players we loved in international tourneys but we might npt know too much about as they didn't ply their club trade in the UK. Before sly, the internet and the champs league were as prominent it was more difficult to follow international players.

{Ed001's Note - yes mate, the podcast dealt with that bit. I am going to do a complete article on their 94 World Cup and the defender who got murdered for scoring an own goal.

I have added those players to the list for future articles. If you think of any others feel free to request them. I only have about 400 articles that have been requested on the Liverpool site to do, so I am running a bit short now.... ;-)

Didn't the Iraqi team get punished for losing a World Cup qualifier? I heard (down Spoons so please forgive) that Madass Hussain's old boy had the team flogged! Do you know anything about this Ed or was it just a Stella addled memory that I have stuck to n my head that never actually happened? 😮😮 MM

{Ed001's Note - you are correct mate. They would regularly get punished for not winning matches and then would be too scared for the next game and so end up getting more punishments. On more than one occasion the player's had the soles of their feets beaten with sticks. Probably a good topic for an article actually thinking about it.}

Cheers Ed, is that would be a great topic. I did hear the rumour about their feet being beaten with sticks. Imagine if Billy Barn Door Paynter was an Iraqi? . He'd never walk again bless him 😂 MM

{Ed001's Note - harsh but true! I often wondered if he was actually Billy the Painter and it was just a mistake when he was in the team.}
