I think the day of the traditional big centre forward type is old fashioned now, the game has moved on. The likes of chapman, andy Carroll etc are no longer really suitable to the modern game, maybe for a desperate ten mins if you need a goal so launch the ball in there to them.

But strikers like aguero and suarez for example who are much more mobile and hardworking are the future and the present. Leodis makes a great point as roofe could play this role perfectly for us with hernandez as no. ten. Cumbersome centre halves wouldn't be able to live with this and would end up with twisted blood. I would try this and bring on wood as a battering ram for last fifteen if need be.

Wood has bagged 12 goals this season, what more does he have to do to convince?

The day we sign Aguero or Suarez I would support the decision to drop Wood, whilst we are a championship side with only one guy scoring i'm with Notts.

Great replies Notts and Gummie. I can't for the life of me figure out why Wood is getting so much slating. He's already over half way to a 20 goal season target which is a good return at any level and yet he's still getting panned. Beggars belief! MM.

Sorry Lanc but agree with Gummie and Notts on this one. If you know where an Aguero type striker is going for less than 3 million let MC know otherwise we are stuck with Wood and his paltry 12 goals! As for Roofe he has never been a CF and scored his goals last season as a 10 or sometimes out wide. Apologies for the sarcasm.

Roofe not scored yet so can't see the logic in dropping Wood for him, we don't have those players (Sergio/biter ) who are world class and also in championship it is good to have a focal point of attack, still interesting opinion White but for me wood is doing the business and roofe still needs to which I hope he will soon (score I mean) . We do need another player who is going to get us goals on a regular basis apart from wood and maybe if roofe scores 1 he will get loads otherwise to keep in top 6 the defense are going to have to keep playing real blinders, small margins in this league as we all know.

always backed and loved wood, agree with vpost to some extent but the game will always have room for a big guy who can score and woods goals is proof of that.

Well said Lancaster. Take woods penalties out and his ratio is poor! I don't understand why people stick up for him! He is no where near the standard we will need to challenge and needs dropping immediately. Your version of strikers for present and future is spot on. As is your roofe Hernandez combination.

Wood is ok for a middle of the table team other than that no. If we want promotion we need better.

I'll admit last season I didn't rate Wood as I prefer nippy, skillful forwards, however I have altered my opinion this season. His job is to score goals, which is what he is doing. I think someone once said of Lee Chapman, "Yeah he scores goals but he does nothing else! " Everyone's entitled to their opinion but I don't understand players getting stick when they're doing well.

Seriously Aus, people need to get over the penalty thing. Most No 1 strikers take pens (Dont see anyone having a go at Aguero, Messi or Ronaldo who all do) , but sure if people want prospective, take away Wood's Lg pens and he is still in 6th overall in the top scorers list (You can bet some of the guys above him have scored from the spot too so he may be higher) and averaging a goal every 2.1 games, that comes out at 22 none pen Lg goals for the season at the current rate. With pens and goals he is currently looking at around the 28 mark for the season, rubbish strike rate, sell him in Jan Monkey. If any of the Wood haters know of someone who can outscore that in the championship, on a championship wage, for what we paid for Wood then contact Monk and let him know because he will be ecstatic.

Agree Gummie he does what he does. The way we play is one up front which means Wood needs to hold up play until support arrives and I think he is doing a bloody good job this season. All some people do is poke at Wood, but for me he is doing exactly what's been asked of him and more. Look at him defending when backs are against the wall, any mention of that, noo. Give the guy a break.

Don't get me wrong fellas I'm not slating wood, I just think he's punching way above his weight. I know obviously we're not going to get suarez etc but I just think that type of player with quick thought, movement and good touch would serve us much better with the clever passes hernandez will supply. The big centre forward is becoming like the 4 4 2 formation, it's so 1980's!

Okay He certainly does divide opinion. I am firmly in the more mobile camp. My current favourite (natural) goalscorer is Defoe so anyone who has a good first touch (and a second for that matter) and a nose for a goal will always get my vote.

Yes, you have to pay for quality but from what I have seen this year Roofe has the potential if given a run. We certainly can play our way out of defence so do not need to lump it up to a big CF to hold up. A big CF is always useful to convert crosses with well directed headers (don't you just wish we had one of them? )

To any of those knowledgable of the reserves / U23s can I ask if we have a mobile goalscorer on our books who maybe knocking on the door soon?
