I started watching Leeds in 1954- Walking to the ground and back from the Hyde Park area with both parents. Had to be there at 1.30pm so I could get to sit on the white perimeter wall on the Lowfields Road side. Often wet and cold but no matter. We had the likes of Jimmy Dunne, Woody (the keeper) Eric Kerfoot, Wilber Cush, Chris Crowe, John Charles(twice)and Albert etc to watch in the blue and old gold. We had no great aspirations at the time, we just enjoyed it when we won and nobody seemed really too upset or bothered about finances and expensive signings(lack of them) and why there seemed to be a regular fortnightly coin collecting sheet carried round the ground to help balance the books. Bad times? Not really it was just like watching a local team who were never going to win much - there were promotions but almost always followed by relegation. But it was your home town team. The 'Mighty Whites' only came about with the arrival Don Revie and his protegy Billy Bremner and the likes of Bobby Collins, Jack Charlton etc. Unfortunately with fame and results came the burden of expectation. It started for me the first home game in division one. I couldn't believe how we absolutely hammered Liverpool 4-2. The rest of the season followed in pretty much the same vein although Liverpool got their revenge at Wembley. We had partial downs after the Don left until the big high when Howard Wilkinson came along. Then more downs until George Graham helped us to avoid relegation before David O'Leary and rest is history. So Leeds and its supporters should have a team that is used to the downs -supporters, I hope, that are grateful that, for the past 50 years or so, the downs have been punctuated by more than a few years of quality. I think we are due for another revival. Its about that time. Its starts for real, I am certain, in August. Fingers crossed.

Great post Hesslian, I too am a long time supporter (1966. Born 1960), and I think myself lucky to have gone through all of the high points of our recent history. Yes there have been dark days, and none darker than the last few years, even in Div 1 or third tier if you like, I had more hope than I had two years ago. But now I feel we have turned a corner, in fact we have not had as young a team since the O'leary days and IF we hang on to this crop of players I am positive that we will get promotion and the team will grow with the players we have, who will grow with LEEDS UNITED culture and once again hopefully, we will be up there again in a few years.
But no matter what happens we will always be Leeds and we should all March on Together no matter where in the league our club is. These darker days will make the future even more enjoyable.

Me 1980,s in Lowfields Rd. Loved it. Five or six games a season as I lived in London and was just a kid. Thank God my father new what was right and done the right thing. Jesus I lived next to Loftus Rd! John Sheridan. My word. Best passer I ever saw. Bairdy and Micky Adams were personal favs too. Pure winners.

Great post Hesslian. I am envious that you got to see the late great John Charles and players of that ilk who were just normal working men back then and not the prima donnas today's football has created.

I grew up watching Leeds in the 80s and Lowfields Road terracing was where I bought my first season ticket. There was a great atmosphere in 80s/90s from the Geldered End, Lowfields and South Stand which must have been intimidating for away fans stuck in the corner (now cheese wedge lower).

With regard to players, I've always favoured a midfield maestro and Sheridan was certainly that. I was there when he scored that famous free kick where he flicked it up from a dead ball and volleyed it into the top corner and ER erupted. After Shez my next favourite was Gary Mac. He knew how to pass to feet, very rarely wasted a ball and scored some quality goals too.

Your all right we've had our bad days but these Ups and Downs are what makes us all Leeds. Even though we've dipped into League 1 we've still experienced more success in our recent history than many teams who have remained in the top flight treading water for decades.

I think our time will come again and soon. Although I haven't been Cellino's number 1 fan, it's not for footballing reasons and I also believe like Ausman etc he's finally woke up and realised he can't run this team like a two bit Italian Serie B outfit. He's got the right infrastructure now and will hopefully attract some decent signings to go with the quality home grown players we have.

Glover! Seemingly another good appointment. Not likely to be flooded with Italians this transfer window then I guess! I have to say, I'm liking the start of this summer much better than last year. Well done MC matey. Now please stun us with a real quality player!!
