Some great posts on here with regard last nights game and I agree that some of the midfield (who I thought had goals in them) need to start contributing. Most seem to now see that Wood can score but has more to his game than being a prolific striker - he has a great work rate and does put in a shift. As far as Monk and his subs then I think we are all a bit confused. Should we have put more defensive types on, dug in and tried to griz it out? I am not sure any of us want to see that - do we? It was disappointing but at least there is a belief that we can win games as opposed to my fear going into every game in previous seasons of how bad the damage could be! It's typical Leeds that we never seem to do well against the clubs below us - never figured that one out🙄. Let's hope GM can continue to learn and not repeat the same mistakes. The 'work in progress' can't be used as an excuse forever. I remain positive and hope we can continue to build on these performances- we need goals - come on boys - let's have em👍🏻MOT.

I'm happy for wood to keep scoring. But I think if he is more a work horse than prolific. He needs someone with him or mids to chip in! As far as subs concerned. Nothing wrong with. Leave well alone. If we winning. Why change. Ok Hernandez if he knackered but not the other two. And please never get defensive. I've seen Leeds lose many a game trying stupid stuff at the corner flag.

Note I said 'he has more to his game than being a prolific goal scorer' - I wasn't suggesting that he was a prolific goal scorer. I wish he was😂.

8 in 15 must be getting towards prolific! anyway, Wood's not the problem, it's the lack of goals from midfield, Pablo's managed 2 but so has Bartley :)

Not really no. Lots were penalties. He seems to be improving and whilst he does that and scores he is worth his starting place. Most of the time since he came here. He was not worthy of it.

RIP Gary Sprake I have to say I am (just) old enough to have seen Gary play, and despite some of the mistakes and criticisms you might read about him, to have played 500 games in 11 years is pretty much a legend? Another Leeds great 'gone'

RIP Gary Sprake. 500 games, 11 years, to me that's legendary status.

I think Sprakes status as a legend was never in doubt a giant among giants RIP.

Oh how sad. I hadn't heard. Yes my first goalie, and a great one despite his few well publicised gaffes. RIP.

Totally agree with every point of your post Notts. I left the ground so frustrated I wanted to go home and kick the cat luckily we don't have a cat. MONK cost the team 2 more points last night there was no way that Wigan were going to come back into the game until he made those stupid substitutions. The fans sat around me in the stand echoed those same feelings. Are these stupid mistakes what cost MONK is job at Swansea?

Got to agree, points lost. Pablo tired but Mowatt should not even have been an option way he is playing, Viera all day long. If Sacko comes off need to change style of play, so why is Botaka sat on covs bench. Wood should have stayed on with ant he was having one of his best games so far. Roofe and Sacko need to start getting on score sheet. Team a lot better at least now we are moaning about games we should have won instead of being steamrollered. Confident of finishing top half of table but need to get a run of wins together to challenge and put other teams under pressure.

Good posts notts and above. Helps me understand wats happening. It seems monk is lacking a bit. And valuable points dropped. Let's hope he reads notts post and sees logic.

Monk seems to be walking himself into a dismissal situation? He has done a lot better than many former 'coach/managers' but then he does something stupid, like late substitutions and loses points? Dow! Still not impressed with Woods as our main (only) striker, we need someone else who will go looking for balls rather than waiting for them coming in from non existent wingers?

Agree0 Disagree5

19 Oct 2016 23:21:42
Most strikers rely on service from wingers, wood has been very good last few games and in my opinion looks a lot leaner/fitter than at any other time since he has been with us, what he needs is a partner, a striker playing off him with pace.

Why Diagouraga is not on the bench defies all logic (especially with Bridcutt out injured) even Murphy would be an option. Why pay these players and not use them even as squad players, the squad is thin as it is without leaving out two experienced players like these. A point at Derby and 3 v Wigan puts us right up the table. We should ave got Dwight Gayle no matter what the cost gaurenteed premiership and money back by next season.? . (. Dreaming now! )

I am a fan of Gary Monk and feel that he has found a system that works and has developed a spirit within the squad that makes players fight for the shirt and although the squad is definitely better than previous seasons it is still lacking the depth in quality, which is something that Monk cannot be blamed for. Despite this I have become increasingly frustrated by how Monk makes use of substitutions, specific I have previously raised the issue of what I believe are pre-determined substitutions at 65 mins, 75 mins and 80-85 mins. These substitutions appear to have little bearing on the state of play, player fatigue or performance. Last night, Sacko was again replaced at 65 minutes, I personally did not think he was showing signs of fatigue but the bigger picture was that he was carrying a perceived threat to the Wigan defence, in particular the painfully slow Stephen Warnock. Throughout the 65 mins that Sacko was on the pitch Warnock did no dare venture beyond the half way line through fear of not being able to catch Sacko if we broke. On the substitution of Sacko, the shackles were taken off Warnock and he started to become an attacking threat. The replacement of Hernandez I accept, he looked knackered and was kicked around the park by their number 16 (no booking from the Ref) however the replacement of Wood defied logic and he was having a good game, holding up the ball and being a general nuisance to the Wigan defence. Upon his departure Wigan were able to build attacks from the back. Every substitution appeared to weaken our team, not just due to the personnel being replaced but each change also led to a subtle change in formation which threw us completely. Monk explained on the radio after the game that the substitutions were forced upon him due to player fatigue and that not having Wood on the pitch to defend the corner was irrelevant. I say nonsense (insert a stronger phrase) to that, only one of the three subs looked genuinely tired whilst Wood is a key member in defending corners, you automatically affect the team's ability by asking Antonnson (physically weaker) to perform the same duty. It could be argued that by giving players a run out helps to maintain the team spirit however IMO this argument applies to Under 9's and not professional football. Monk needs to take responsibility for this decision, the warning signs were there when he did the same thing against Ipswich and Barnsley but he got away with it. This time it did not and he got bit on the backside, therefore it is time for him to reflect and learn from his mistake.

Thanks George, I would also add that questions of the club's conditioning team have to be asked if they can't get Sacko into a state of fitness 3 months into the season.

The biggest problem with Sacko is insufficient end product. He should have already bagged a few goals this season. Monk's subbing of Wood last night was a real howler. Monk's choosing Mowatt over Vieira for sub almost as bad. In my opinion Mowatt should be sold in January.

totally agree regarding mowatt, shouldn't be any where near 1st eleven. and when is aus going to admit that wood should be the first name on the sheet?

If we don't sell Mowatt in January he'll go for free in the summer, same as Taylor. No doubt he'll go to a "lesser" championship club and then get his form back.

Lancaster I disagree. There'll be a market out there for him. A Rotherham or Cardiff. We won't get more than 0.75m for him imo.

True wexy lad. The progress we've made in the last year is good. Just another goalscorer is needed. Someone who at this level guarantees goals.

Not so agreeable! We are making progress and I was semi pleased with performance v derby. We should have at least drawn. Prob won. We are playing a lot better now defence seems sorted. But. 1 point out of 6. When it should have been 6 out of 6 really, isn't reason for optimism. I'm pleased with progress but we can't keep dropping silly points all season.

yes few points off play offs. but loss and draw if that carry's on then more than a few point should of been draw and a home win then in play off place . and then other teams start looking at you . and is us in different light.

People keep saying we need another goalscorer. At the min wood is scoring fairly consistently. To add another goalscorer would probably change the shape of the team . What we really need is for the ones playing to start chipping in a bit more . Other than hernandez and wood can't see anyone else scoring that regularly, we've scored least amount in the top half of the league. Roofe needs to add goals and sacko once this starts happening we'll be in a better place . We're not doing too bad but could be better.
