Unfortunately my head proved to be right and a 2-0 loss turned out to be the correct call. Without the likes of Hernandez and Bridcutt and with O'Kane possibly not fully fit it was always going to be a tall order. Having to play the two young lads, Phillips and Vierra from the start with one not playing in his favoured position was bound to come unstuck at some stage in the game.

With the likes of Shelvey et al up against them they were going to struggle and Phillips looked out of his depth. The lad will continue to improve but at this stage he isn't good enough without experienced and quality heads around him. He, and they, will learn and this just another milestone.

Without a quality midfield we were made to look very average at times. In addition it's difficult to legislate for the type of mistake that Green made which ultimately changed the game. With a one goal lead Newcastle were able to relax for the most part and then put in the killer goal when they were given the chance. It was a class goal created by class (at this level) players.

Green is very suspect with lofted/floated balls into the 6 yard box and has conceded three goals because of this weakness. Like Silvestre he is a good shot stopper but flaps too much. Given the weakness of both keepers in the box with crosses and high balls I do not know if there would be a big difference playing one rather than the other. Doukara I thought played OK, Ayling was outstanding.

Taylor was average and Jannson and Bartley were their usual solid partnership. I again worry about the Yorkshire derby. With Jannson, Hernandez, Bridcutt out we might struggle. I can see it going either way with a draw being the most likely.

We have a good team when everyone is fit but we are still a bit thin when it comes to cover in the middle of the defence and creative mid field. Not too depressed with the loss (we were 'ok') just as long as we win next week.

Yea good post hess, shoes we lack strength in depth and need a bigger squad with a quality replacement in every position. P. s please santa can I have a quality goalkeeper for Xmas ;)

agree dj was amazing to see er like that and it has not been like that since league 1 really, hopefully that site and sound becomes more and more common. And Martyn you want a quality goalkeeper for xmas I will see what I can do, although these days I see myself as decent and soild more than quality although still better than green.

Not disappointed at all today. sounds like we played well and we're unlucky. I do feel that the way the football pyramid works stinks though and today has highlighted again. -
A team who were dreadful last season and were clearly unable to complete in the Orem are rewarded for total failure in their parachute payments. any team with a billionaire owner and then 50 / 100m payments should be walking away with this league! Let's face it it stinks that teams who are so bad they can't win for months in the prem get given the money to pay £15m on one player! If you get relegated then surely you should get whatever any other team in that division gets! If I do a bad job at work I wouldn't get loads of money to try and get better, I'd be told to not come back!

Just had to come and have a look after what's been said by a few Leeds fans on Twitter etc regarding this, your not the first to bring this up about "parachute payments", but it's such an inaccurate statement. They have not helped us in anyway at all we haven't even touched them. We recouped £90m from player sales, how can you not expect us to reinvest? We made £30m profit and have built a decent squad, what do you want us to do say sorry about Liverpool/Spurs wanting to pay £25/30m for a few overrated individuals in wijnaldum and sissoko? Villa actually spent £50m this season and look where they are. albeit their signings aren't as good as ours overall I think. But do you see my point, rafa is rebuilding us and we are now being run properly. Anyway it was a decent game with a good atmosphere from both fans, all honesty it was a premier league game in the championship. Your in good hands with Garry monk and put up a fight and I think you'll make playoffs, it would be nice to see Leeds back in the prem.

sorry leeds fans but I have to agree with jtoon on this. 1stly toon have re-invested and sold well, I thought they would sturggle but keeping rafa was their saving and it is showing on the pitch. also coming down from prem is not always easy look how many teams have sturggled like villa who are still pony. finally I agree with parachute payments 1stly religated prem teams have to cope with prem wages in championship also football sadly is business and in business the bigger players get better pay if in prem you get more money as a product and should be entitled to that money. we will not be complaining in a few years when it is us spending our parachute payments on a re-re-return to the prem after going up and coming down to go back up (and stay eventually) here is to two big clubs with great fans on what hopefully will be a good season for both. this said I do think newcastle is dangerously close to scotland and for such reasons they should be re-moved from english league but apprently this is unreasonalble so I do wish them and their great team and fans the best.

21 Nov 2016 06:45:39
Bermondsey you are correct that better players have more wages, but if you are a business and you fail then you should have a contingency plan in place, not rely on the money you receive for failure. If any other business is so bad they fail then people loose their jobs, cuts are made, wages halved etc! I agree that Newcastle have so great players and a wonderful manager, but that wasn't my point. Yes villa are struggling, but they still went and spent £15m on McCormick. Surely that £15m should have gone on sustaining the club, rather than giving them a massively unfair advantage in this league.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Nov 2016 08:37:44
It's not really just about the parachute payments. The general point I was meaning is that there is an obscene amount of money in the premiership compared to the championship, and lower leagues. The system should be revised so there's more of a level playing field and more clubs have a chance of progressing even without Chinese trillionaire owners. I know such owners don't always guarantee success, but how many times do we talk about being 2 or 3 0players away from promotion. That would be 2 or 3 quality players we could never afford.

21 Nov 2016 13:20:13
i do see your point ben and do agree and speedy is right the money between the prem and champ is very vast but sadly that is business, the money between west end shows and off west end shows is also vast. sadly prem is worth more so clubs get more and spend more. I think we should be positive, soon we will be in the prem and then that moeny will be ours and then it will not seem so bad I promsie.

OK today was a reality check and shows us how far we have to go. There was a lot of inexperienced players on the pitch today and having a couple of players out makes all the difference. On the whole we're in a better position than we've been for years, we are a top ten team who with a bit of luck and a good run can make the play off's. Another couple of big crowds before January can hopefully push the owner to invest MOT.

Bang on I am not so disappointed this evening we know where we are get Hernandez and Bridcutt back and a couple in Jan and we will be there at the end of the season. Just been on a Magpies site and they are buzzing at beating us.

Nice to see honest and positive feedback/posts. Shame bout the result but we were competitive and a couple of bits of luck and we would have a point. On the flip side if green could catch we might have had 3 😂 We continue to learn and continue to get stronger. Couple of additions in the new year to give us a couple of more options and we will be laughing. Strangely I am just not as down as I normally am after a defeat. Positivity reigns. MOT.

Had 3?. need to score to get 3,Phillips and viera have done really well for us this season, but they won't come up against 2 better centre mid players all season, games like that when you need your experience players (bridcutt and Hernandez) . they are a good team and may go on to win this league by 15-20 points.3 points out of Norwich away and Newcastle at home is a decent return, important to re group and go again, Phillips can't play 10,and he needs taking off corners, sometimes you just have to accept the opposition were better.

Too right Peacock. Obviously disappointed at the defeat, but not gutted, and it might have been different if Hernández had been fit. Type of game that we might have been hammered in last session, so plenty of reasons for optimism. I know a goalkeeping howler is always a disaster, but it's getting harder to justify Green playing ahead of Silver Vest.

never happy to see us lose however that was the most pleasing loss I have seen in years (and there have been a few) great newcastle team at our level but we did well and did the badge proud. defence look good with silevstri for green. midfeild look able to both defend and create and strikers look good. I still think we will be in or around promotion which is great for us. bit unlucky and we were missing dallas and hernadez who make us stronger. like roofe love aling and really optomistic. one slight moan is douk, glad he is back in squad but think he is more a impact sub or good against weaker teams as he is not good enough to trouble best sides, I prefer sacko, that said douk would not of played had dallas and hernadez been playing so only a nit pick moan really. oh yeah and green is pony.

Yeah get we did ok apart from the first half an hour when we gave them too much respect which meant they gave us the run around. The frustrating thing is, even though they dominated that first half hour, they only had the one chance of note when Gayle got on the end of that quick free kick so Green's cock up was a big blow but fair play, we bounced back and had a go at them. We were never going to come back from the 2nd goal which was a good goal but we didn't fold like we would've done in previous seasons although I do think Newcastle took their foot off. I think Viera looked a bit lost today but we shouldn't be too harsh as he's still young and learning. Ayling impresses me each time I see him - other than Grimes (& possibly Green) I've been impressed with the signings Monk has made so far. In January maybe we could make a few of the loan signings made permanent and - couple of new faces to add a bit more competition and have a real crack at it. Let's be honest, we knew it was going to be difficult to compete with Newcastle, they've spent big money to be the best side in this league and they'all run away with it. At the start of the season I expected a top half finish and still think we're on course for that but depending how well we do over Xmas we could still have a real good go at the play offs. I know we lost today but I feel much more positive today than I did after the defeat at QPR on the first day of th season or at home to Birmingham. Still plenty of room for improvements but we're moving in the right direction - today reminds us how far we have to go that's all.

20 Nov 2016 15:08:31
I think we just need to pretend that game never happened. I said at the start of the season that Newcastle would walk this League and they will. They will beat most teams home and away this season. The play offs are our aim. If we get into them then you never know.

Believable2 Unbelievable0

20 Nov 2016 16:42:17
you did call it, I thought they might stutter but they have been great, I think we look like a play off team and no one will look forward to playing leeds which is great as we have been very soft over the past few years.

Today shows we miss creativity of Hernandez or similar. Ayling was our best player today
And surely time to give the Silvester the cat another chance? And what prem team would realistically be looking at Taylor. Poor again. Still positive for the rest of the season though 👍.

have to say I think taylor is prem class all day long and is far better than bryam is/was. I think a few lower to middle teams will want taylor and think he will do well unlike a few who have left us recently hope we get about 5 mill for him which would be fair IMO.

Well for my sins I watched the game with relatives one of whom supports the Pride of Devon ( I know, I know) . For what it's worth he thought Taylor was pants and no way Premiership class and he thought we lacked a couple of players with pace, and thinks our goalie is a joke. I didn't bother telling him what I think of his team.

dont think that was a bad 45 we were a little outplayed but they are a very good team and most in form team in country for a reason, potnus is like a stronger bigger quicker better molenar but booking was silly, bartly also very good. I was impressed with aling who looks great but don't get much of a mention on here. we grew in game and was unlucky with goal. I hate pikcing on keepers but green is a liablity and silvestri the cat is so much better he is a better shot stopper and both can't control the area so it is a none brainer for me. We grew in game with a young up and coming side who will only get better. Love to see Er like this every week not just when the big boys are in town MOT.

Looking at the line up today there looks a lack of creativity. I think I'd rather have Sacko than Roofe. Then again he could make a impact from the bench. Just hope it's not too late by then! 😱 Glass half empty, as per usual. Anyone else feel really nervous?
