I remember driving up to Elland Road from Wolverhampton with my wife with our season tickets to watch Leeds. A midfield of Strachan, McAllister, Batty and Speed. The guile and composure of Strachan and McAllister, and the energy and passion of Batty and Speed. Untouchable, as they proved for a few glorious seasons.
My wife used to come just to watch Speed....something about him being gorgeous with great legs.
He had everything. R.I.P. Gary, and thanks for the memories.

Read this from Wilko I am 50 years old and tears here...
"He had a life of success to look forward to I'm sure."

Wilkinson added: "It's unbelievable, I'm still struggling to get my head around it. I've known Gary since 1988 when I joined Leeds and I've rarely come across a better balanced, lovely, genuine person.

"He was a terrific player - not as gifted as some but he made the most of everything he had - worst of all for me I knew his parents, in particular his dad, his lovely wife and family - I just find it very very difficult to come to terms with it.

"I cannot start to try and understand what his family are going through at this time.

"We're not born footballers and like everyone else they had a talent and that became their job, but basically they are born people and subject to all the stress and strains and the good things that happen to one in life."
RIP Gary Speed.

Nothing in life really shocks me, but Gary Speed passing has left me speachless.
I remember being at the old dell in 92 with the saints fans sitting on my hands and we were winning 3.0. i put a bet on for 3.0 and a few minutes to go, Speed scores a screamer from 30 yds and I cursed him all the way home. Great leeds memories.. Thanks Gary..

RIP Gary. Suddenly yesterdays result seems so insignificent. Can still see him sprinting clear to make it 4-0 vs sheffield united april 1990. Just one thought oh for that midfield of strachan, batty, macca and speedo today. Sad that it always seems to be the good that die young.

Love you gary!millwall keep stum!sc

Believable10 Unbelievable0

Not the best fixture we could have had in the circumstances.

Let's hope the Millwall fans show proper respect for Gary on Saturday because if they try to wind us up I can see it not being very pretty.

And if they do show respect, maybe some of the morons who go in for 'hating' other football fans might just decide that they don't have an excuse for showing us up.

Agree8 Disagree0

Please forget what Millwall fans may say or do just respect Gary and his family.

Agree6 Disagree0

Lets not prejudge millwall, I am sure 'most' or their supporters will respect the minutes silence, hopefully. If they don't then that is the time to criticise, not now.

Agree6 Disagree0

I'm 100% sure most of their fans will but it's the handful of nutters on both sides that worry me. I saw some really idiotic behaviour by Leeds 'fans' before the play off semi a few years back and it only takes a few on both sides.

In some ways maybe it's the best fixture we could have - a display of respect by the Millwall fan might lead to less of that in future. As someone who doesn't do hate and never joins in the 'stand up if you hate Man U' song on principle (why hate anybody?), I'd like to think so.

Yer cus millwall have great track record last ge they waved Turkish flags at us hope they buck the trend but doubt it

SG has a difficult few weeks. He needs to covince KB he has what it takes to galvanise a dressing room that is becoming increasingly agitated with players who are beginning to lose belief in tactics, man-management and whether or not he knows his best team.

However all this is incidental with the sad news of the passing of Gary Speed. I had the opportunity to play with and against this stalwart of the game and he gave our great club fantastic service and I will remember him fondly for the pleasure he gave us Leeds fans.

Rest in peace Gary a fine man and a legend of our club.

Does anyone posting on here that is backing Grayson actually attend any games, and if they do watch what must be through a vision of Rose tinted glasses and large sums of alcohol do they find the performances at Elland road acceptable ,because for me it's not,the last two home games have been an embarrassment to the players and supporters alike,to see our team soundly beaten and apposing fans sing and dance with delight is also embarrassing.,it's time for a management change Grayson has took this squad as far as he can, we NOW need a manager that can make us a top 2 side, and not only that some for our fans to cheer about.

Believable6 Unbelievable1

I go to every game. I just don't see why anyone thinks Grayson is the problem. If you ask me 'am I happy with the performances' then the answer is 'not really'. If you ask 'how has Grayson done with a poor set of players and no money to spend?' then I'd say it's a bloody miracle we're not in the bottom three.

I think the rose-tinted view is the one that says Grayson out = big improvement. Even more deluded is the 'Grayson out O'Neill. Hughes etc. in' series of postings.

Getting rid of the manager will NOT solve the problems on the pitch. The team needs new players. I've posted the scratching shed statistics on here a few times which proves mathematically that Grayson is THE highest performing manager in the league on a spend/points won ratio. Why do you really think that simply changing the manager is going to improve the team?

People calling for Grayson's head are missing the point or simply deluded about us still being a big club. We're not famous any more and we have f**k all money to spend.

Agree3 Disagree4

Change of manager seems to have worked at bristol city!a team that we robbed 3 pts off the other week.statistics are only worth the paper theyre written on ,i like grayson but time for a change we are embarrasing.

I have backed SG all the way and will do for as long as he is at the club, however I dont think KB is going to have much patience with him. I think he's hanging on by the tips of his fingers and I dont think he has long left to turn it around. If SG was to go, I would love Martin O'Neil in charge. Who would everyone else want?

Believable7 Unbelievable0

27 Nov 2011 08:24:15
well,no surprise we lost too barnsley!our record aint great against them!i think the last time we beat them was in the prem!!no need for panic!

Believable1 Unbelievable9

Yes no need to panic..! - lets just make all our home games £30 a ticket and get just 19000 fans turn up just to see-saw up and down the championship with little ambition from both Manager and Chairman

Grayson out = Premier League simple

Agree10 Disagree2

Grayson out = Premier League simple? How does that compute? Think you're being a bit rose-tinted and naive mate.

Reality check - let's see if you can work this one out.

Name a better manager who will come and work for Ken Bates either on a shoestring budget or who can do better with the piss-poor squad he has. I bet you can't; and please don't say O'Neill, Hughes, Poyet, Ancellotti etc. These people will not even be remotely interested. If Grayson goes we'll be shopping in the Peter Reid/Brian Laws market and they are no better than what we have. At best we'll get a big name player like Zola with no management track record. Be careful what you wish for.

SG probably isn't the best manager in the world, he's still inexperienced and learning, but he's done OK given that he's had nothing to work with. We were 7th last year in our first year back in the Championship when EVERYONE with a realistic world view expected us to be in a relegation battle. Now the team is in the play off places. We probably won't be there end of season unless Bates splashes some cash - and he's made it clear that he won't be doing that, other than on life's 'necessities' like 4 star hotels, conference centres and restaurants (must remember to book me & the wife in for a luxury weekend in Beeston...)

Given the calibre of players at ER Grayson's an achiever. Even the 'stars' like Snoddy are not that good (plays with his head down, turns and runs into trouble and misses the obvious simple ball, doesn't know when to pass). Clayton is the only truly premiership quality outfield player he has to work with. Maybe Pugh could do a quietly efficient job there and Lees will probably be good enough in a year or two. We need new players not a new manager.

Agree5 Disagree5

Grayson doesn't seem to motivate his players its simple, they just don't seem interested - in view of this Bates will not tolerate it for much longer - KB is trying to build an empire for premiership football and that's his ambition for this season alone, KB has publicly stated he isn't happy with current form and league position as he believes Leeds should be pushing for a top 2 finish, I am not a SG hater or KB hater i am in contrast a Leeds fan and a realist, however i believe KB has got funds for SG but he seems resistant to dip into the market when its been clear to everyone our defence is the worst in this league - so what does he do..? buy Maik Taylor....! good going Grayson

Agree4 Disagree0

Too much Football Manager methinks. You don't know how it works. Managers DO NOT buy players. THE BOARD buys players. We needed a backup keeper - we got a pretty decent one in my view with Taylor.

I'd agree there's a motivation problem, but Grayson's in the position of having to polish turds every week. The real problem is the squad.

You 'believe' that KB has given him funds he hasn't used. On what evidence? I read the programme notes every week, follow the hilarious Bates interviews etc. He has made it VERY clear that we will not be buying our way into the Premiership. Again this week he referred to the need to earn money on the '340 days a year football isn't being played at ER'. I don't hate Bates particularly but I am also a realist. Top half with this squad and no funds is better most managers would do.

Agree2 Disagree2

27 Nov 2011 01:19:20
This is a very poor league with most teams very much on a very average par hence an average/poor Leeds side in a play off position. The so called smaller teams must lick their lips when Leeds come to town - not only do they have a near full stadium they have a great chance to put one over an average/poor/lacklustre/inconsistant/No plan B/no heart(but not always the case)/players playing despite having a poor season(I feel for those working hard and sitting on the bench week in week out regardless - must be gut renching!)/a dejected home support.
I have tried to remain enthusiastic all season but I too am losing heart(no kidding Sherlock I hear you say!) The circumstances and the cards Leeds have been dealt over the last few years are why we find ourselves with a Chairman who doesn't care building museums instead of teams, a manager who has a good track record but nowhere to go with no money and now nobody of any note wanting to join the club (not on these wages and not for that chairman).
On a good note we are still in a play off position! I for one wouldn't fancy our chances in another play off battle - our midfield couldn't battle there way out of a paperbag. I really feel for our defence and attack who are never supported properly by the midfield - there lies the route of our problems and playing Howson every week despite his form aint helping morale or the team.
By the way about from the subject of Leds United I'm a good laugh at the pub!
I have been to every home and away game this year and after nearly 40 years of supporting Leeds through thick, thin and even thinner I have reached breaking point and will probably retire my footballing days to the golf course. I can always dream of a rich Arab rescuing my team and providing hope which I am clearly very, very short of!

Believable7 Unbelievable1

Your not alone friend, its killing me going down to ER to see very little passion or pride for the shirt...! Time to invest in the next generation of youth -

Taylor, Thompson, Hatfield etc

Agree7 Disagree1

Bit naive to think the youth team will do the trick but I agree that it's worth giving them a go - worked OK for O'Leary.

Agree1 Disagree6

Yes 5th, but losing to barnsley, no disrespect to them, but barnsley. It's a bitter pill to swallow.

Agree2 Disagree0

It's not just Barnsley, it is the way we lost to Barnsley. They are a third rate team and passed us off the park. Can anyone remember us stringing three passes together without losing the ball? We are a joke, midfield is non existant which is why we hump the ball forward only to be lost by Becchio, Keogh or Mcormack. I say lost by them sorry guys in most instances it doesn't come anywhere near you. We need someone in midfield who we can "play through". They are about, Barnsley had two yesterday so we should be able to get someone. Grayson is clueless and my bet is that if we don't beat Millwall he will be gone.
