How about this, David o Leary with a backroom of redfearn and Naylor, talk about passion, you would have that in abundance.

Believable15 Unbelievable2

Plenty of passion yes but a massive hole for where the tactical ability should be.

all this talk of going back let's get the sarge back, wilko for gaffer

I don't think Hughes, or even O'Neill (at the momenr) are good choices. I'm not sure who I'd want, but after reading these posts, I think I quite like the idea of O'Leary returning. Our youth system at the moment is pretty much back to its former glory as it was under Wilko/Hart/Graham, and although he didn't buy brilliantly, he was spot on with youth. The scouting system we have under Gwyn Williams (found Becchio and Snodgrass) will help his transfers be more shrewd, and I think he might actually make it work!

As Mourinho seems unrealistic, any manager appointed will be met by criticism by some supporters. Of all names discussed here, David O'Leary is probably the man met by most enthusiasm in supporter base! Personally I'll be thrilled! Face it, DOL did great, and can not be held responsible for our later fall! Ridsdale and board the ones to blame! I'd take Gus any moment, and would be fairly satisfied with McDermott. Hughes would drive me suicidal! But make DOL new gaffer, and I will open my sole bottle of Dom Perignon -85 to celebrate! The guy has unfinished business whith Leeds. Please GFH, let him finish it! Would rise attendence to 28000+ over night!

can we put this o learly thing to bed firstly yes we had great adventure into champions league with him and he was a fans man! BUT ground work had been done by g. g. prior and we had large kitty of monies that wernt ours! to splash around he's never worked on a budget and never won promotions where as mcdermott has worked on smaller budget and has eye for lower league talent and keeps low profile! nickybee

Believable5 Unbelievable6

What groundwork did George Graham do? Our youngsters were doing great and he refused to even look at them. That was one of the main reasons Paul Hart left

Agree5 Disagree3

To be honest either way we should make playoffs or even automatic but o'Leary would bring back the atmosphere, excitement and the elland road which is well known for being an intimidating ground but in recent times has not been. I would want to give the job to McDermott or poyet if o'Leary wasn't available but it would be magical if he came back.

Agree7 Disagree4

04 Apr 2013 22:43:55
No to be honest I don't think we can put this O'Leary thing to bed. The support for him is growing by the minute and there is as much merit in appointing him as anyone else in fact he has better credentials than most including McD, Hughes and O'Neill imo.

Ok. here goes, I have been shouted down a few times over the last 12 months when I have touted DOL to be the next manager.
Without a doubt, when he came in and immediately put YOUTH in the side it was the start of the best period since the Don. yeah ok So we had good times when we won the league in the early nineties, but not playing football like we did when DOL was in charge. DOL has to be given a chance, possibly with someone like Nayls in tow.

I would second that, I think Naylor has a big future with us.

Agree7 Disagree2

The difference was Wilko built a team, he Sold the name Leeds United to the media, Players, etc, Brought in Strachan, Jones, Chapman, Shutt, Varadi, etc a mixture of talent and if not talented hungry, Once promoted created the best team since Revie with the formidable midfield of Strachan McAllister, Speed and Batty and won a Div 1 league title, O'leary inherited his team and had money on tap to add to it and won??. although I must admit I enjoyed those Euro nights watching O'Learys team Wilko was by far a better manager.

Agree12 Disagree0

As an Irish Leeds fan I would NOT like to see O'Leary back. His book, and in particular when it was issued, was a bridge to far for me. Also, he was fortunate as to the group of players he inherited. Granted they did play good football under him but he is not the man to bring us back to the premiership.
And by the way Ken don't even think of talking to Hughes about the job or the planes between Dublin and Leeds/Bradford will be very empty next season.

Agree4 Disagree5

O leary worked wonders with young players, read his book and if to be believed, he didn't want the kind of cash risdale was offering and often questioned the transfer fees and wages risdale was negotiating, eg seth johnson sharade, and let's face it what have we got to lose Warnocks just about got us relagated.

'Leeds United on Trial' says it all really. My great memory of O'Leary should be the peno he scored to put Ireland through to the 1990 world cup quarter final. But it's not. As a Leeds fan I will never forgive him for his book and the timing of same, and lest we forget, like George Graham, at heart, he will always be a gooner!

While there are several potentially good prospects around, or shortly to be so, for manager, I think it might be worth looking overseas for one. Martinez came to English football in the football league, Laudrap has been a success at Swansea. A foreign manager is likely to cost less than the compensation/wages package of a british manager and he might just have a few unknown cheap gems that he can bring with him. A foreign manager is also less likely to be devisive when it comes to us fans as he will have no history.

Just a thought.

Believable5 Unbelievable0

Sounds sensible, I can think of a portuguese guy currently working in spain whos a bit 'special'. joking aside I think you could be onto something, especially on the 'no hisory' point.

I have just read Peter Lorimars column in the YEP and he talks about the squad only needing a couple of players next season a point which Neil Warnock also made, am I the only one that thinks this is so far off the mark, if we are to be genuine promotion material.

I am happy with the back four of Lees, Peltier, Byram and Warnock if he joins on a permanent basis but would certainly want Kenny replaced either with Ashdown or another experienced keeper. In relation to midfield this is clearly our major problem the only one I would like to stay is Green the other players like Norris, Hall, Brown, Austin, and to a lesser extent Diouf should move on.

i do recognise Diouf has a lot of class but it is clear his pace has completely gone and cannot get past a player and create opportunties for the strikers which has to be a core function for somebody out wife. I know people will say how you include Hall in that, when he has not been given games, but for me he is another who will turn out to not be quite good enough.

Therefore for me we need at least 4 midfielders with two of those being genuine wingers not midfield players playing their out of position trying to fill a gap, those new players can then fight for a position with the likes of Dawson and Poleon. Up front I would retain Morrison and McCormack but we need to add a Player of real quality a proven championship scorer capable of 20 goals a season, if we get that and the other players I believe we need 6 in total and need to spend around 7/8 million pounds to do it. again I can hear fans shouting saying there is no way we would spend that much, however I believe we will do that business in the summer.

I just hope we spend on the obvious gaps we have, and spend wisely.

Warnock has signed on a free not loan!

Agree7 Disagree1

04 Apr 2013 21:29:06
We do only need a few players. We have the solid hard working players in the midfield. We have been missing some younger legs in there all season. A little bit of skill and pace will make us look much better.
We got rid of gradel and replaced him with varney.
Got rid of snoddy and got diouf. Which isn't too bad but he can't last a season of games.
Lost becchio got morison 2 different types of player so definitely need a goal scorer.
Lost howson picked up green, noris, austin and brown which are all good players to have around squad but all lack in areas they need in cm.
Defence is still weak but 1 cb could be all we need there.

Agree0 Disagree2

I don't think the keeper position is such an issue as I think Ashdown deserves a shot. you could either stick PK on the bench or sell him on (wont get too much for him unless NW takes another job of course) and get in a loan keeper as cover.

I agree on the back four but you could also bring in a right back and play Byhram right side midfield.

You are spot about needing pace and creativity in midfield. I would keep Diouf, Green and maybe Norris as cover. Then bring in a ball winner (brown and Austin are red cards waiting to happen!) and 2 quality wide players with the addition of Dawson that should give us options.

Up front that leaves Morison, Ross andSomma if he can shake off that injury plus Poleon. I still think we need someone whos going to a 20-30 goals a season man and those cost money!

In short we need 4-6 players IMHO

I reckon Karl Robinson from the MK Dons would be a good choice as our next Manager. Oneill and Hughes are not for Leeds, neither is McDermott & Appleton or whatever his name is. Personally I would like to think DOL has a chance but can't see it, so why not let Robinson have a go.
We need a guy who will allow us to play attractive football, and who can also defend. we've had enough of watching mediocre shyte for too long.

Believable1 Unbelievable9

In my mind there is only one man capable of being our next manager,
and I cannot believe no-one has mentioned his name yet.
A young up and coming manager, Bags of playing experience across Europe and the world (Benfica, Perth),
A goal machine?
A Leeds United legend, born and raised in Leeds,
A former England international.
What more needs to be said?.

Bring back the 'donkey', Brian Deane.

You know it makes sense!

It doesn't matter who we get as our next manager as whoever it may be, it will ( unfortunately ) never please ALL of the fans.

I personally would be happy with
( in no particular order ).

David O'Leary
Brian McDermott
Gus Poyet

and one that is on the oddschecker list who sounds like a good option ( going off his wkii managerial record ) is.

Luis Enrique

Believable9 Unbelievable1

Good choices. All of those are good managers, but I've got to say O'Leary would be my preference.
Lets start off the new season where we finished (when O'leary was sacked) with a great manager and a good playing squad.

Agree8 Disagree2

Oleary loves Leeds, the city and the fans, and wouldn't cost a fortune like Poyet, he is available no and would bring the young players in as well, favourite in my book.

Agree9 Disagree3

May not cost a fortune to bring to the club but let's forget about oleary he is now in the past to many of are fans need to wake up and realise that he isn't coming back would rather see mcdermott get the job and the fans really back him all the way

Agree4 Disagree6

04 Apr 2013 18:30:15
O'Leary is gathering more support than I expected. He would get my vote, I have nothing against anyone coming back if they have the credentials for the job. Personally the idea of McDermott or O'Neill does not excite me in the least. I can't actually see O'Leary being offered the job but I think he should be in the top 2 with Poyet.

Agree7 Disagree1

"isn't coming back". erm think you might be wrong, it looks good for O'Leary

1) he fancies taking on the job
2) he has a good rapport with the fans
3) costs no compensation
4) Worked in Dubai not long ago so he is a known face in that region and apparently has a few 'contacts' out there.

I hate it when people say don't look to the past for players and managers - who here wouldn't take:

O'Leary - manager
Beckford - upfront
Gradel - wing

and on promotion:
Milner - midfield
Lennon - wing
Robinson - goal

All of those would be cracking, ah wait they're from the past can't have those.

Agree2 Disagree2

Why are fans against O Leary he may well have been manager when the money we did not have got spent but if the chairman keeps giving you money to spend do you think anyone would have said no. At the end of the day he was manager during one of our most exciting times and created a great atmosphere at the ground which would be great to see again. There is no doubt he has moe experience from that period than any of the proposed new managers being touted have on their CV.

Agree7 Disagree0

04 Apr 2013 20:12:51
Give O'Leary a 10 year contract with a clause of 1 year compensation if sacked. Let's have some continuity with someone who play's an attractive style and we can relate to.

Agree3 Disagree1

04 Apr 2013 20:28:08
O'Leary made 2 big mistakes, the first was promoting Brian Kidd and the second was the book but he was still the best since Wilko and no one since he left has come close either.

After all this time it suddenly dawned on me where we're going wrong. Our players are that old we need the lace back in the ball hence we won't be able to play the long ball game any more as the ball will be too heavy. Simple.

Its interesting. Both mcd and oneil seem to have their hands up saying pick me pick me. Maybe leeds think a better manager wii become available. Maybe martinez or something. Doubt it myself. I would get mcd now. Also, warnock saying new manager will get enough funds for a few decent signings. We only need 4. Futures looking good lads. Just don't get hughes or keen or holloway.

Believable11 Unbelievable2

Their after poyet and it seems they are prepared to pay 2.5 million pounds for him

Agree4 Disagree1

I would rather have McDermott and give him the 2.5 mill to spend on players

Agree11 Disagree1

Warnock said they couldn't afford him and are they going to wait to see if he gets promoted first? Bit of a risk!

Agree0 Disagree0

We need more than 4 signings. More like 8 or 9.

I would like to apply for managers job, i'm a good friend of neil warnocks. He said that it dosent matter that I don't know anything about football, can't understand the rules, no nothing about tactics, don't like under 30yr olds, because he got the job and did brilliantly. i'm also female so will work for a pair of shoes and bottle of winewine.
