Well first game of season and we beat what was practically a premiership team 3-1. Not just beat them but destroyed them first half. Excellent team performance yet the experts are out singling out players who are not good enough to be in the team that won . Phillips who has been picked by our last four managers, but what do they know about football. Berardi, who maybe is not best in that position but is the player Bielsa chose to play there and hadfaith in him to do a job. Yes he did make mistakes but that is a new role for him. Douglas made mistakes so should we get him out as well. It was an excellent first game at ER and well worth the money. Think its a bit early to start saying he can't play, he's crap. No doubt players will be rotated playing this style but let's get a few games in before we start slagging everyone off and picking negatives. Plenty of positives on show on sunday, happy with that.

Believable6 Unbelievable0

06 Aug 2018 20:09:38
loads of positives but please can we address Phillips

please someone explain it to me? Last season he was poor then let's look over what he did yesterday

1. at fault for the goal
2. poor pass accuaracy
3. should of been sent off
4. should of been booked after getting sent off
5. 94 minute thought it was ok to flick up ball in penatly area from their corner to then miss air kick the clearance leaving the ball at the mercy of their team in our penatly area

these are not opinions these are things he did, ok he got away with them but will cost us, Phillips gets picked because of injury and/ or lack of quality. there is a reason Veria got sold and no on wants that donkey

I don't need to go into beradi, I have banged that drum enough, anyone not sure look up twitter most fans slating him for what he is passionate but pony

lots of positives but also things went out way and could of cost us on a different day. This current squad will not get promoted as players on fringes still not good enough (roofe, phillips, beradi, cooper, dallas) they are decent but not great and over 46 games at this intensity will cost us as it did last year please remember us 12 games in last year we were all certain we were going up. we need to learn from history no manager can polish a turd and sadly we have a few turds.

Your opinion BW, i hold a different one.

Agree4 Disagree0

06 Aug 2018 20:39:36
Bermondsey, welcome back! I think we’ve had, got rid of or are in the process of getting rid of a lot of turds! But you can’t change everything overnight! The boss has chosen the players he feels he can work with now and most people seem to think that collectively. They did a good job for him! He has addressed some key weaknesses, give the the chance to show what he can do with this team. Phillips could have been sent off, we could have scored 3 more goals, the penalty might not have been a penalty. We won 3-1 against a team thought to be up with the best. Let’s see how we do against Derby at Derby. I don’t think any Leeds fan will get over confident this year, we know it will be a long slog and we will be wary of another collapse post Christmas. But not a bad start!

Agree3 Disagree0

06 Aug 2018 20:48:28
I think there are some good facts but I also think that all of these players have potential, as does any one, given the right coaching and mentoring. Granted, some are better than others but you can’t take away a good overall team performance. Mistakes happen and they always will but with confidence comes a belief and that can turn a player around. Yes there are better players out there but slagging individuals off is just unhelpful to the cause. IMO 🤔. MOT👏🏻.

Phillips played well. He will make mistakes as the seasons goes on but that should take nothing away from yesterday's performance.

PPeacock . the definitive term in there is . TEAM PERFORMANCE . the boys fought and covered for each other, a few mistakes from more than KP but Bub expects that . if they were all robots he'd never lose :)

Great post Bige I couldn’t have said it better myself because basically I’m too lazy to do so!
Bermo I knew it was your retort before I saw your name at the bottom! If the coach can make us play that well then I’m sure he can improve individuals over time. Welcome back by the way.

Agree3 Disagree0

06 Aug 2018 21:20:56
By the way Bermo a stoke player did a far worse high tackle before Phillips and got away with it so could of been ten against ten. As for his passing accuracy I don’t know the stats but the manager has the team taking risks in possession so that might account for that.
No defending Beradi with though mate! You.

Agree2 Disagree1

06 Aug 2018 21:30:19
Every player no matter who they are will make mistakes. That’s the nature off a footballer. And the position they play. Some mistakes will be more costly than others . let’s just be happy with the team performance and take it for what it was. A surprisingly great performance in the 1st day off season. Let’s be happy with that instead off nit picking faults. MOT. I’m one off Phillips biggest critics and that’s being nice about him. But I’m more than happy with the effort. MOT. ⚽️⚽️⚽️👌😀.

06 Aug 2018 22:41:07
I do agree and I am happy (just hiding it well) thought we would get smashed yet we were the better team and deserved to win. Loved the performance and I am being picky and moany but I honestly don't get phillips and how anyone with eyes and/ or brain can say anything other than donkeyturd!

Bige it is not opinion he should of been sent off fact (yes so should of their guy but i don't care about them going forward I care about us) this is not opinion it was as red as man u's shirt

he did flick up the ball at thier corner and then air kick a acrobatic clearnace in the 94th minute again not opinion he did do that.

his pass accuracy was poor (ok this could be down to tactics)

I don't understand how anyone watced him (please watch it again) and say . yeah going forward we will be ok with him in the team. He is just not good enough

we have good manager (unproven here but undoutbaly good) we have some great players (aling, douglas, saiz as good as anyone in this league) we have some very good players (rest of squad)

my only worry is Beradi, Phillips are not good enough and should never wear our shirt again

cooper can be great but can be a donkey chops, roofe while very good doesn't score enough

i don't mind us not getting promoted, i like us being champ team, what I do mind is the thought we can't go up and to me beradi and phillips playing more than 10 games for us this year = us not going up

this is my opinion. however what Phillips did yesterday is not. he was a massive pile of pony with a dodgy barnet. I also suggest if he was not leeds, if he was not local and come thorugh youth. if he was a VO signing (I don't mind VO either contraversially) everyone would be on Phillips back. leeds lads get a lot of leaway and personally I don't understand it?

that said of course i loved the performance just but feel we played well despite phillips and beradi not because of them

sadly for a load of I told you so. i hope I am wrong but as the wife will tell you. i am never wrong.

Yes PPeacock, I just wanted to emphasise the importance of it being a team performance :)

Agree1 Disagree0

07 Aug 2018 07:47:07
Bermondsey, probably never have a team or squad of players on which all the fans agree. The keys for me are performance and results. In the first game we delivered and looked like a team. That team spirit can make an enormous difference and help those fringe players perform to a higher standard, look at Leicester in the prem. Berardi, is cover, who loves the team and shows the right spirit. Phillips seemingly has been earmarked for a very specific role and time will tell if he can deliver, but give him and Bielsa some time and let’s see what happens. I’ll be interested to see how Phillips and this defence copes with Derby!

One of our weaknesses over the last few years has been the ability to genuinely compete with the top teams and pick up points against them. Most people would think Stoke would be top six, so that’s a good start, Derby gives us another chance to rate our style against another favoured team.

If we play like that against some of the weaker teams in the division, we should get some good victories this year.

We need some luck with injuries to key players and we need some discipline, to avoid the damage that red and yellow cards did last year. I’m excited!

Agree1 Disagree0

07 Aug 2018 08:00:18
From being at ER and seeing them guys run and chase for every ball, I don't think we should be picking out the players that made one of two mistakes and wanting their heads. Yes we have some players who may not be as technically gifted. But what I watched on Sunday was a group of players, many of them frustrating to watch last season actually playing as a team. Let's get behind them, we won well for God's sake. Enjoy the moment.

I think I was the first one on Beradi and got a lot of stick now most tend to agree he is useless, now for me it is KP turn

I think it is the Bermondsey Millwall in me sadly, where I am from you have to hate at least one player or you ain't seen as a proper fan, when at millwall i blend in by slagging off the team

I shall just be happy with the win and try not to worry about the season ahead. so anyway my wife is proper fat and aged badly.

Lads i need to make a confession i am, like you a massive Leeds fan but today I paid a visit to West Ham in Stratford ( Olympic park) and I felt wrong. My neighbour invited me and my son on the tour and to be honest I was very impressed with how big and modern it was and then we went to club shop. This just felt so wrong all them claret and blue shirts hanging there, bubble machines and Hammers everywhere. So what I am asking for father is forgiveness. I will never do this again it was a moment of weakness.

Ayling is the backbone of our team. I don't think it is just a coincidence that when he got injured against Newport our season turned upside down. More than the play, I think the players look towards him most of the time. Should be the captain. Great result on Sunday. MoT.

Great start in the first competitive game with the new management team, consistently performing at this level is the next target, alongside bringing in 3 or 4 new players to strengthen the obvious weaker areas of the squad. Then strenghten again in January to hopefully keep the momentum going.

First excellent game eating humble pie Spanish but we started well last year and faded.
Positives for me how we closed them down and certain players stayed on there feet instead of constantly rolling around when anyone go near them .

One of the things I liked the most about yesterday's game was the stunned, possum in the headlights, look on the faces of the Stoke players. These experienced Premier League footballers were rattled. They had no idea how to counter what they were confronted with and it showed. The Championship is in for a wake up call. Early days but I am glad I maintained my satellite subscription. With Derby's game on this weekend and Bolton in the Carabao Cup midweek after that, I see some serious television time in my future. MOT.

Amazing result against the supposed league favorites, made them look ordinary.
We played with pace and energy and when didn't have the ball, closed down well, especially first half. We also, I feel didn't have our what will be our first choice side on show, likes of Pontus, Forshaw and Bamford.
Like most views, unsure if we can sustain that pace for the season with a smallish squad, still 2/ 3 players short, but could be a top 2 side.
I thought roofe was a different player, he worked very had and had a good game, still don't think he the answer, had chances
but no goal. Not sure if loco will change team after that result and another tough match up next, didn't see derby match, did they look good?
Defo need that CB ( not penn) , beradi at fault a few times and could have been costly, great intercept from cooper, who played very well. But if we get injury or suspension, will be in trouble, go for foyth?
Still think selling vieira was a mistake and feel he be better instead of Phillips, but history now.
Think next game, should play Harrison in for alioski and then look to bring on Roberts or Bamford for roofe. Lastly would like Nmecha to come on loan and buy Maddison.

Believable3 Unbelievable0

Agree0 Disagree1

06 Aug 2018 16:35:51
Agree about the size of the squad but guys surely Bielsa has spoken to the likes of Pep, Poch et al and had a very good idea of the challenges before he even set foot in England, you don't become what appears to be a world figure in football (going by the number of foreign journalists at ER yesterday) without knowing what you are getting yourself in to

He ain't no Hock he's my Bielsa!

Loved that performance yesterday, it had everything last season lacked skill, pace, quality, determination, effort . Watch that first goal again 9 Stoke outfield players plus Butland in front of Saiz and he takes them all out with that pass.
Let's hope AR gives MB his one player, which is obviously going to be a CB and then we are good to go.

hello all,

hope you all had a lovely summer! firstly well done Russia for a great world cup (thought it would be a car crash but was great and well done England for bringing a bit of passion back to the fans and not making summer suck! With our promising youth could be a good time to be English

now to Leeds, not sure what to make. Some things fill me with excitment others fill me with dread.

MB is clearly a good manger but will he lead to burn out over 46 games 2 game weeks in hard league? we have small squad and lack quality in reserve so I do fear we will get caught out.

love the summer recritument (well done VO) last year some good foerign singings like allikoski and saiz now this year all know the league so good mix and blend.

great result and performance yesterday but think we flattered a little bit and everything went out way, in other games this won't be the case and will cost us

love douglas and aling best full back pair in the league, aling for me maybe the best player in the league i love him

glad to have great choices in goal finally!

bamford will get goals

now the negitives. Phillips useless, should of been sent off, was at fault for the goal, gave ball away and made awful mistake in 94 minute at their corner, today got all with it all, other games he will not be so lucky. over 46 games we need better

Beradi, . uselss, just useless love passion but don't care, I would give passion still don't play me because i'm not good enough. He was at fault for their goal and made about three other mistakes (one was awful) that could of cost us. Yesterday it didn't over 46 games it will cost us

cooper i like him, he was great yesterday but he was amazing start of last season then fell off. again over 46 games think we need better sadly (maybe bit harsh on coops)

finally bit contraversial roofe, great player like rod wallace, clever works hard good movement but doesn't hit target enough, created a lot yesterday but didn't look like scoring, as number 8 or ten I love him but as main goal threat I worry

well done yesterday was great result and performance but we was great last year for about 12 games and finished 14th, i do worry without one more CM, CB and CF the likes of Coops, phillips, beradi and roofe may cost us over 46 games playing at MB's tempo

still win lose or draw have to love leeds so maybe I should stop being a wining old G@T.

Hi BM. Don't necessarily agree with all of your post but then again it's all about opinions and everyone is sees the game differently. Roofe had a great chance in the first half. Took his shot first time and was only denied by a fantastic save. Phillips is playing in a new position and will improve. Coops gets a lot of stick and for me is a confidence player. Playing as a centre half you will be the last man at times and blamed for goals conceded but if the team play as a unit like yesterday and defend from the front, it will make the defences job much easier. It says a lot when his team mates asked for him to be captain.

Down those pints. even on a Monday you slackers!

Had to check the score this morning to make sure it wasn't a dream. Amazing performance. If we can do that every week win loose or draw the Leeds fans will be fully behind the team . It's only game 1 I know but I'm more positive now about the season. Once foreshaw is back and jannson is fully match ready that's not a bad first team . I'd be very concerned though if we pick up injuries or suspensions within the central defence.
