Greetings all regulars and newbies. It's been a while!
Just wondering if any of you 'orrible lot went to Super Leeds' 100th birthday bash yesterday? I was there with my daughters Mick Junior and Michaela, sat originally in NW lower having a few sherberts and then onto the dance floor to bust some shapes in my brand spankingly new gold velour shell suit (class) . I predicted a riot and there very nearly was one with a dozen or so yoots kicking off at the back after too many halves of Shandy Bass. Great night and Ricky did Super Leeds proud! Top lad.

Michael (Up The Whites, Down The Pints)

{Ed001's Note - welcome back MM good to see you mate. Have you been ok?}

Been keeping a low profile mate. We've all read the stories about Spygate but I was honestly there with my binoculars only to check if Lampard's missus was OK getting dressed after her shower whilst big fat Frank was playing headers and volleys with his mates.

MM.

{Ed001's Note - I am sure it was entirely innocent.}

Nice to see that's not the case.

After last season should we be interested again? Good player who can also play the numer10 role.

Spooky, I just wrote a very similar post

I do think he would improve us.

09 Jun 2019 22:56:49
Any player who shows any sign of not wanting to wear the shirt, should in my view. not be entertained.

10 Jun 2019 09:44:01
Feath

How do you make out he showed any sign of not wanting to wear the white shirt?

As far as I can see, he was put up for sale and some, not all, journalists linked him with Leeds. Along with many more clubs I might add

I have never read anywhere that we put a bid in for him and he knocked us back

Even if that was the case, he was obviously offered a move to Premier league club. I can't fault him for his desire to better himself. In fact, I would live a team of 11 players who wanted to better themselves. The net effect would be a huge positive for Leeds

And I go so far as to say, I would have no problem with us buying or loaning players from Chelsea or Man Utd or Millwall or any other perceived rival team. I just want my team to do well and if such players gave my team success then it's a means to an end. I would probably still have my favourite from more local stock but the team matters most.

BPF again beaten on the near post from a long range free kick. He doesn't seem to be learning from his mistakes. Still time to improve but needs to work on his positioning.

Agree14 Disagree0

09 Jun 2019 00:50:34
Notts Actually he needs to find a new profession. He stands in wrong place deliberately to steal half a yard so other side of his goal more protected. Works at League One level and below but above that you get punished. BPF canna protect his goalmouth nor his actual mouth from spouting garbage. I'd sell him as fast as Spanish Box. Huffer Miazek and Male better. George has spoken. Make it so Radz. Stop wasting money.

09 Jun 2019 08:18:32
George is right we have 4 good young goalkeepers but still don’t seem to have found a reliable first choice that also plays the Bielsa way. Kiko isn’t going to be easy to resolve but if we can sell back to Spain, we should do it. Bailey should go out on loan where he will get game time and show everyone, including himself how good he is. Huffer or Miazak could be 2 and 3 to a solid and fit number 1.

09 Jun 2019 14:05:58
I have to agree. I never saw anything in the lad to show he has what it takes. He looks like league2 at best. Hope he proves me wrong though.

09 Jun 2019 15:24:02
Totally agree Spanish

Send BPF out on loan. Could be quite a number of League 1 clubs willing to take the current N ireland No1, and if he proves he's good enough everyone's a winner. If not he can go next summer. Eve NM though I, went to a number of U23 games last season, I've never actually seen Huffer play - only Miazek and Male (and Blackman of course pre-injury) . Was impressed with Miazek - especially in the National final. Could not believe how small Male was - and whilst he was clearly spring-heeled - it is his height that gives me reservations about him stepping up even longer-term. Spanish (and other U23 veterans) , I'd be interested to know whether you have a preference between Huffer and Miazek, and if so, what it is that gives them the edge.

Also agree that if we can sell Kiko back to Spain (or elsewhere) that would be for the best, particularly if we had an experienced Championship or back-up Prem (like Pope) keeper ready to sign on the dotted line.

09 Jun 2019 23:16:59
We were top of the league with BPF with one of the best defensive records in the division - #justsaying.

10 Jun 2019 23:41:06
Not that simple Tuppence.

08 Jun 2019 23:49:26
Interesting read about championship clubs kicking up about the ffp regards villa, and will the premier deduct points if they have broken the fl rules. Seems to be a rules for one and not the other!

Agree0 Disagree0

09 Jun 2019 00:51:52
Farsley Rules for members. They're no longer members but if they get relegated they should be penalized then.

09 Jun 2019 10:06:06
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t FFP a UEFA ruling, and therefore applicable across all European leagues? That in mind, All who fall foul should be punished, as others have been before, to equal previous punishments at least. So Villa should be facing a fine and 9 point deduction.

{Ed002's Note - FFP as applies in the Championship is an EFL rule.

09 Jun 2019 12:21:19
Villa and other clubs should be penalised for being villa and so on and so on.
If it was Leeds the amount of protests would be astronomical and we would be playing Gateshead next season.
What are villa alleged to have done?
😂🤣.

09 Jun 2019 12:40:40
Cheers Ed. Obviously in the know more than me. Do you know how it differs?

{Ed002's Note - The Premier League and EFL differ in the amounts of money allowed to be "contributed" by owners, and "lost" by clubs. The UEFA rules are different again - but there are so many nuances it is not viable to explain it here.}

Does anybody see the second half of last season as catastrophic. A collapse of epic standards Bielsa and co didn't seem to be able to cope with what was happening very much like TC the season before. Yet he seems to be untouched by the fan base. The players that performed so well in the first half of the season got none of the credit and Bielsa got none of the blame when it all went wrong. I pray we don't start next season the way we finished. Can someone tell me why it shouldn't happen.

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Jun 2019 11:57:59
I know what you are saying Wex, but I believe injuries and lack of investment from Radz in January was our downfall and reason for a poor second half.
I think Bielsa does deserve credit for the first half of the season, let’s be honest, he managed to polish a turd, it was basically the same team as the previous season that couldn’t muster 3 shots a game. He made them play the best football in 18 years or so.
I think with the break, the additional personnel required (that I guess is agreed in order for MB to stay another year) come in, and MB’s increased knowledge of the Championship, we should start well and be pushing for promotion again. Oh yes, the additional billions from Qatar will help as well!

08 Jun 2019 12:20:17
Wex, your a clever lad, it's a simple answer

Leeds generally have a decent first XI. In the first half of a season we are competitive against most teams, and our huge support gives us the 12th man

By the turn of the year those eleven players are starting to tire. The culmination of bookings is starting to reflect in the suspensions. Injuries are part and parcel of a competitive sport

So, by the turn of the year we are having to use tired first team players and/ or the second string players that lower the overall quality of the team.

It's just the way it goes. We are unfortunate that we haven't got a big enough first team pool yet

. and heres the thing loads of you posters out there say it's all the chairmanship fault. He should be buying this player or that player. Or it's the managers fault, he should have strengthened in the January window. Your always looking for a person to blame.

. loads of posters were having a go at Orta last year for not buying players for the first team but always buying for the reserves. But this season the U23s and U18s do brilliantly with those players and we are all, quite rightly, proud of their achievements

. now those U23s deserve promotion to either out first team squad (or loaned to league clubs to continue their development)

Edmundson, Halme, Wilks, Bogusz, Shackleton and Clarke have all now put their hands up for 1st team consideration. No quick fix, but all I see are improvements, upon improvements, upon improvements.

My 'glass of gaiety and light is fairly overflowing' as I sit here in the 'hot tub of hope'

Btw, Mr Radz, please stay. You are so much better a chairman than Mr Bates ever was, or those other grey men that leads us to division 1
And Mr Biesla, thank you for signing for another season and giving me so much to look forward to. I don't actually care if we are promoted just as long as you play that brand of football. I had a smile on for the whole week after each game I watched. Fan-bl00dy-tastic.

08 Jun 2019 13:53:11
Axe you can say what you want about lack of Investment and suspensions but Bielsa had a full squad to choose from with 6 games left.

08 Jun 2019 14:10:12
General, I fully agree and love the Avatar. Axe, again I concur, a top post. We'd, again I concur, Bielsa did have a full squad to choose from, but as the General said, he had already polished the turf and at the end of the day, a turf can only pass itself off as a gold nugget for so long. Bielsa sent them out on the pitch, they capitulated, not him, or Orta, or Radz. My humble opinion is that the current management team deserve some gratitude from us, having done a good job. It is some of the players who should be scrutinised more. Shocking individual mistakes cost us dearly at the end. Onwards n upwards. MOT.

08 Jun 2019 14:38:06
Don’t think that’s completely true! Douglas, Clarke, Alioski, Forshaw, Roofe (a few games)

08 Jun 2019 14:56:21
Wex, it’s one point where I think we are very much in agreement. I’m not sure anyone yet has really explained why things went wrong in the key games during the run in. We clearly had enough quality players and were in situations where we should have closed the games out against Wigan and Derby. You might spend a lot on players and then that might not happen but then again it still might if they are not the right type. For me it was about leadership on and off the pitch at key times in those key games. Cooper for me couldn’t deliver in those key moments, but apparently we still see him as a key piece of the jigsaw, Bielsa and Carlos couldn’t effect it from the sidelines, don’t know if lack of fluency in English is more of an issue at key moments. Hernadez, with all his experience seems to get dressed himself with the pressure and usually leads by example but not if he is over stressed or over tired.

I was always taught that you can’t put something right until you really understand what went wrong and way. It’s one of the reasons why I don’t think it is just about money.

08 Jun 2019 15:01:39
Axe, as you know, I agree with your approach. So much good stuff but everything couldn’t be fixed in one season and to be fair it hasn’t been for lots of other clubs who feel that they deserve to be in the premiership and have been there more recently than us. I am sure we are building something far better than we have seen for a long time, loads of positives, but have to keep learning and being committed to getting better . This year will show us how well, Orta, Radz and Bielsa can do that. I’m really looking forward to the season and the games. It’s a great time to be a Leeds supporter. Move over, open the champagne and turn on the bubble machine, I’m about to do a belly flop into the “ hot tube of hope”!

08 Jun 2019 15:30:04
Wex Only some mate, only some.

08 Jun 2019 16:31:13
lets be honest second half of the season was a joke, to fall out of first spot to not go up (only team to do so I beleieve) was poor, our form was relegation form (again I believe)

but let's be honest all season we was poor against poor teams millwall at millwall should of beat us. we were poor, loses to hull, blackburn, brum and qrp also poor. all these happened first half of the season.

all season we were soft touch for poor teams, this was not due to tiredness or injuiries it was due to tactics and lack of bottle.

I hope MB has found a way to break down tough teams who fit back and have a bit more steel about us in defence.

08 Jun 2019 16:53:08
The only surprise to me is that everyone is surprised that a Bielsa team fades away, back end of the season.

08 Jun 2019 17:18:54
Fair point Leodis and despite a “ joke” of a second half of the season and “ relegation form” and always being a “ soft touch” for poor teams, we missed out on automatic promotion by 7 points! If KP had been sold at Christmas, Harrison sent back to Manchester City and Beradi played in goal, we would have been champions by The end of March!

08 Jun 2019 17:44:16
Spanish

No, not saying it can all be fixed in a season. Sorry if it read like that

I am just optimistic that the longer term approach that seems to be in place, will be a huge advantage to the club

I look at the squad that started last season and have seen really good youngster break in. And more good youngsters get on the bench.

I am loving supporting a club 5hat has a long term plan in place.

08 Jun 2019 21:20:38
“Full squad to choose from”. Credibility ends there I’m afraid. We were nothing like at full strength, and that’s what crippled our season.

08 Jun 2019 23:42:10
Lack of rotation killed us in the second half of the season.

08 Jun 2019 23:42:44
I kind of rate Bielsa. Didn’t realize he was second rate! Silly me. I suppose some prefer MCs managerial appointments?

08 Jun 2019 05:30:48
I think Radz strategy and success this season will depend heavily on who from the U23s can step up. Maybe a season too soon though this year?

Agree0 Disagree0

08 Jun 2019 09:35:20
It’s a good point Alf but perhaps when the strategy has been discussed between Radz, Orta and Bielsa, they have been specific about the names who might be able to move up.

Based on last years approach, I would think Shackleton and JC, if they are both still with us, will be more regular starters and bench regulars. Which in effect gives us two new players compared with the start of the season.

Of the centre backs, I think Struick has moved ahead of Aappo in Bielsas books, possible due to his physical attributes, stronger more aggressive player. He could be seeing more action, depending who we bring in. Davis and Gotts will make more bench appearances and hopefully more sub appearances.

If we bring in more wing options it’s not good news for Stevens, who probably will have to show more consistent running and backtracking to please Bielsa.

McCalmont and Nicell, I can’t see getting much first team activity this year.

Edmundson, is the obvious possibility as a striker, but again depending on the other first team options, either another cracking year in under 23s or a loan period until Christmas to show what he can do.

The two wildcards for me are Bogusz and Kun, both skilful and explosive players, Bogusz ahead of Kun on the stagecraft and maturity he shows. But both have potential star quality!

The problem is these kids need an opportunity to make the most of either through injury, desperation or extreme bravery and you don’t create those opportunities by bringing lots more players in who would be ahead of them in the pecking order. You need to take a few risks with them and expect a few mistakes, but then Kiko and Cooper showed that age doesn’t eliminate bad errors all the time!

I’m sure I’ve missed some out like Odour,

08 Jun 2019 09:56:53
No real strategy there. I think that's called making do.

08 Jun 2019 11:02:42
Strategies that involve little investment it looks to me.

08 Jun 2019 11:08:13
Having seen the U23s a few times this season I'd agree with all your points Spaniard. WEX what's the point on working with the youths if you don't intend to use them, I'd say that should be the strategy mate.

08 Jun 2019 14:11:21
Exactly Farsley, I’m basically repeating what you said, but the whole point of investing in u23’s is to develop players for the first team squad. Why would we ignore them and spend millions on other players that may not cut it! Clever strategy in my opinion! I’d like to see more use of younger players coming through, rather than free transfers and loans!

08 Jun 2019 15:10:11
Agree Farsley, come on wexy! I can understand your points about investment in the first team but not in the development teams. There has been big investment in players, coaches and support staff for those levels. Honestly go to the games, sit behind the coaching benches or watch them on the app. See the growing level of interest in those teams and the success of them. What is the point of doing all of that if you don’t offer those players a route into the team. As George points out, Bielsa probably could have done more with Shackleton, often last year and Edmundson, Aapo, Davis and Struick at parts of the season, but I think it was about giving them more time. I’m sure that with this approach being trumpeted more this year, names from the under 23s would have been mentioned and it will be clear after preseason who is being used. That is a strategy, it might not be your preferred one if you want success bought only through shed loads of Arab money but it is a strategy and actually one that lots of people enjoy and prefer.

08 Jun 2019 16:33:58
it can not be a year to soon, we must go up this year

it will be a poor league with no big hitters, relgated clubs all small and or in toruble. bigger teams in league could also struggle like west brom and derby due to FFP

I believe borough will annouce boss soon and I believe it will be a good appointment and very impressive boss so i expect them to do well, outside of that I think we should be aiming to win the league auto at least. anything less is a failiure.

08 Jun 2019 17:01:20
Again it's good to drool over one or two U23s but at some point someone has to have the cojones to make that decision and put them in. Unfortunately that decision usually comes out of desperation. A player going thro a bad spell or even a cruel injury. Unfortunately whilst it's good news of Qatari money coming in but bad news for the U23s as any problem areas could well have money thrown at them.

08 Jun 2019 17:28:18
Bermo, you may think that should happen but I’m sure by the start of the season you will be predicting that you think we will be lucky to scrape into the playoffs.

At the start of last season, who would have predicted Norwich and Sheffield?

For me success is playing attractive attacking football, filling Elland Road every home game, being in contention at the turn of the year and then again at the end of March!

The rest will depend as ever on some help from Lady Luck and the injury god, better use of the Jan window and the squad and coaches learning some of the lessons at key moments of the season.

Let’s get you up to Elland Road in the centenary season and have that pint!

08 Jun 2019 17:30:05
Leodis, you are right but I think in The message from Radz, the intent has been made clear and hopefully in the discussions specific names have been mentioned as to who from the under 23s are going to be expected to feature.

08 Jun 2019 21:28:23
Radz hasn’t deceived us. He’s been clear from day 1 as to what his plan was. And it wasn’t promotion in 12 months. He’s clearly invested in quality youth, and will do again this summer from what I have read. For the stability and wellbeing of the club, this is the shrewdest approach to adopt, as opposed to boom or bust, and let’s be honest, those who go for “boom” fall foul of FFP. We will not go down that route, nor would I want us to go down the Ridsdale route ever again, which nearly saw our club destroyed.

09 Jun 2019 14:14:43
My only concern at the moment arr the transfer links for our players

No point in building for a sustainable future in a higher league if we are always going to profit from the good form of our players for a single season

When we came up from league 1 we sold Beckford, Gradel, Snodgrass, and that Bradley bloke. They all went on to have good careers

Becchio has a good season, we sell him

McCormack and Smith become a great attacking partnership, we sell them

Cook looks great in his first full season, we sell him

Wood has a blinding season, we sell him

Viera looks a better prospect than Phillips did, we sell him

Could we not just keep our good players for 1 extra season and see if we could flourish rather than running to standstill?

We have a really good first eleven now. Couldn't we just get rid of the deadwood and invest their salaries into higher salaries for those deserving players from last year. That is to say, keep Pontus, keep Phillips, keep Roofe, keep Clarke

I don't care if we don't BUY anyone in this transfer window. If we can keep our better players this time.
Losing Viera just so we could buy Bamford didn't really work too well anyway, and Spurs didn't do too badly using a similar policy.

Use any money we have in a warchest to fund a couple of good quality season long loans.

I can see that if we sell Ekuban, Saiz, and now BPF too, we could fund one marquee transfer in, to use to sell some shirts.

Finally thought. how come Cooper has the best season of his career and there is not one bl00dy rumour linking him with a big money transfer away!
