i know this is not a rumour but.... as posted before, i'm the same way inclined, maybe Michael Brown could become our 21st century Gordon Strachan (football wrinklies & youth players) look what he did at the back end of the 80s-early 90s for Leeds.
Believable1
Unbelievable7
That was exactly more thought too. Give him a chance.
Agree0
Disagree0
Not in Strachans class will never make the same impact
Agree0
Disagree0
He's already a couple of years older than Strachan was, hasn't had anything like as successful a career, has signed from a mid table championship side on a free, and probably doesn't have the same freakish longevity that strach had - particularly as he's missed quite a few games with injuries in the last couple of years.
I hope he does well and he's better than nothing but its a typical Bates signing: a free transefer for a player that there was little competition for.

With Michael Brown's experience and so-
how I think he will ad more bite which we
were lacking last season. If he is fit and
sharp I do not see hie age of 34 is a hindrance. All Simon has to do is add in 1
more experience midfielder like Montgomery and we have a team that can challenge a place in the Premier League.
Agree0
Disagree0
I had heard somewhere (possibly even on here, so I won't vouch for it's credibility) that a deal had been agreed a few weeks ago, and that he would officially sign at the end of July, as to gain an extra months full pay off Newcastle. I'm not saying this is true, just something I read, that actually makes a bit of sense.
Agree0
Disagree0
Your all obsessed
It was one tweet thats caught on as the person that first put a comment on twitter interpreted the Skybet odds as it officially happening, when in reality its guess work.
Agree0
Disagree0
I'd heard that also but I wasn't sure about it
Agree0

Egotistical person that wants adolation before he retires........it better not come off. Actually it wont I know he wont drop the wages ;)
Agree0

Ooh stoke the fires why don't you lol ;)
seriously it was only on twitter so just think someones messing about tbh
Agree0
Disagree0
It's a twitter RUMOUR
What don't you guys get?
Agree0
Disagree0
Just think how many young players we could get at Leeds on smithy's wages, you arent think about the future if youd rather an old crock instead of several young talented lads. were moving backwards if this comes to pass.
Agree0
Disagree0
No doubts ppl are gonna say if SG thinks hes good enough then he must be yadda yadda yadda. You all fail to recognise that 2/3 of graysons signings havent lived up to expectations. Would you all support seth Johnson if Grayson fetched him back? You all pick and choose to suit urs agenda
Agree0
Disagree0
Havent you guys worked this one out yet. Every season you link yourselves with Kewell, Bowyer, Woodgate and Smith - AND every single year they never sign. In fact this year they have all gone to rival CC clubs...so can you please get it You cannot attract anyone
Agree0
Disagree0
This just shows how desperate the fans are getting, begging for the return of a mercenary.
Even if their is some truth in it, which will be a terrible transfer, what was LUFC's spin... to make the fans feel so s**t that we wont sign anyone then everyones that desperate we become thankful for Alan F***in smith???
Like Hell
Agree0
Disagree0
It isnt about attracting anyone its simply the fact that the return of old boys ISNT TRUE, the club uses their media speculation as a way to draw other players in or as a smoke screen. When youve learnt sommet about our club come back and have your say. However rip the leeds fans obsessive over old leeds players>>>Be my guest its mortifying
Agree0
Disagree0
And please tell me - which great players have signed behind this veil of secrecy? The only decent ones i can think of is Kasper (who has now moved on) and Gradel (who may now move on). Its also very embarrasing that Leeds have to lie about their true ability to attract good players in order to attract lesser quality players. Brilliant, just Brilliant

Believable13

NO
And lets hope it doesn't happen for our wage budgets sake and that of our lack of cover throughout the season when hes laid up collecting the highest wages at our club.

I know he wont get the reception the bighead finks he will get, he'll bomb, hes crocked and everyone will realise this in no time

I agree have had a season ticket a long time from , age 7 with my dad through to age 18, and smudger was my childhood hero. Obviously upset he picked scum, but in terms of his career for all we know it was the ony big club to go in for him. Would love for him to come back to elland road :)
Agree0

May be because numpties are running out and putting bets on this happening simple because of a widespread rumour on twitter, then bookies think theres something in it due to the sudden interest...................................

No Big european teams bid higher than the scum, but at the last hurdle Smith pulled out. When qouting that clubs were offering less upfront they only conveniently include english clubs ;)

Wasnt sure about the Brown signing at first, but after looking into him, he sings like the hard nut we need in midfield, great partnership with Jonny.
We need to sign atleast 3 more players, a keeper, centre half and a left back. MINIMUM. Hopefully Stockdale will decide to join us but we have strong opposition for the signing, Lichaj is a definate for me, loved his style of play last season. Also one player we should look into is super Sonko, Stoke released him recently and he would be a rock in the Championship but probable competition from premiership clubs.
Any thoughts Ed?

Agree0

Sorry but why would you want smith back. he is neither a good midfielder or decent striker. he has had his day and it is time for everyone to stop looking at getting old boys back and trying to relive the old days. if he was to come it seems that it is only because no one else wants him
Agree0

ITS A RUMOUR ON TWITTER THATS SPREAD
STOP EMBARASSING YOURSELVES
Agree0

Hes crap in midfield and as a striker, plus he's severely injury prone. Why the hell are you all desperate for him to return. Who's gonna oay his wages cme the end of the season?
Agree0
Disagree0
Pple r very selective in what they choose to remember>>>> the old days led to our demise ;) We have done v.well so far and weve done it without primadonnas, lets not take 3 steps back we need to move on with youthful players and not look back. Other clubs fans take the micheal out of us dwelling on past years and your all cringingly proven them right.
Agree0
Disagree0
This is to who ever wrote...Pple r very selective in what they choose to remember>>>>firstly yes we do need good young players to go forward, but when they are sold for pennies what do you expect when maybe a few quid more would kept them, secondly primadonnas the premiership produces them on a production line, if and i hope we do get back into the premier league, they will no doubt start to appear here too. next you talk of old players, leeds rumours is packed with links to old players SG has signed two already. I think the message from the top is simon sign who ever you want as long as heĀ s cheap, and the campaing war cry for this season is dont hit us in the KB WALLET. get real MEDIOCRITY with signings to date is going to be the norm.

Im sorry but as much as it hurts me to say. Our defence was laughable at times last season and with no major signings (even on free's) to atleast try and fix the defence problems..... is MASSIVELY disapointing. As its wasnt Kaspers fault before anyone ask. I still think his a highly rated keeper. Some goals we let in last season was just a joke.
We need atleast 1 Center Back to have any hope of getting in the play offs. And someone under the age of 29 as well. Not someone at the end of their career and completely past it
Agree0

Looks good. but i think Mcormack will be the main man and maybe giving somma a few games alongside him will keep becchio on his toes

Would be nice i know for sure stockdall is with us now. but smith wont happen and lichaj would be a great signing
Agree0

This is still not a team good enough to get us back to the promised land paddy has to stay fit for starters then for me becchio isnt fast enough and needs a strike partner and obrien is mistake prone for me we need 3 more players, a g/k, central def and a striker
Agree0
Disagree0
O'Brian is mistake prone.Paddy just back from injury.Connely not that consistent.
We still need a experience centre back.
Someone like Matthew Upson. A organiser
a leader to hold the backline. Our backline
leak in 70 goals last season. I say the left
back the weakest. Address the left back and centre back problem and we will have a team challenging for a place in the Premier League this season.

my thoughts (which i'm sure people will disagree with lol)...
Brown and Stockdale (providing he signs) - both quality signings. even though Brows in 34, still can run our midfield with Howson.
Johnson, glad to see the back of him - i would of paid his petrol expenses for the journey to Norwich. Kilkenny, probably would of like to keep hold of, sayin that if he doesnt sign a contract dont go chasing him.
rumours: Giles Barnes apparently having trial with leeds, another good aqusition for me and another one i've heard is Quinn/Montgomery from the blunts...hopefully get them in too - both are quality players. on a side note - why didnt we approach Guy Moussi from Forest who is out of contract, seems he's off to Derby now but would of been mint at Leeds and Earnshaw another freebie which could of done a job here.
Any thoughts ed? {Ed015's Note - one of the more sensible posts on here}

Eric Lichaj - £500,000
Giles Barnes - Reports of him having a trial in Scotland with the squad
Sanchez Watt - Has not joined the arsenal squad on their pre season tour, he wants to return.

Take Stockdale and Lichaj but Watt and Montgomery give me a break. Forest couldnt wait to get rid of Koncheskey it was aweful for them so he is not the answer. Why do we always have a problem with left backs?
Agree0
Disagree0
Why the urge to sign left backs when both aidy white and ben parker are at the club.
Agree0
Disagree0
Nicky Shorey would be the only one realistically that would come for a reasonable price but he would be a quality acquisition if we could get him
Agree0
Disagree0
If Ben Parker had Whites pace we would have a great left back as it is Bens a bit slow and Aidy is more of a left midfielder as he's not the best defender, both give their all and are miles better than Bessone

Lichaj can play left back if we get him in, connoly can then play right back wi paddy and Ob in centre

had quite enough people talking rubbish about KB and SG. There would not be a Leeds United AFC if KB had not done what he has done. The football club has progressed to the stage where we do not need to sell our top assets in order to stay out of debt. You need to remember that as being chairman of the football club KB has to make smart financial decisions. He has got LUFC to where they are today and we can only go higher. As for SG I have doubted past transfers and I am unhappy about the Schmeichel transfer, however ever since he has been our boss we have made progress. I have faith in him as he is also a Leeds supporter. Leeds United will continue to grow unti lwe are back in the big time. It takes time and patience. Also my predictions are that Ramon Nunez will be a revalation this year and also McCormack to be Leeds top scorer by the end of the season.
UP THE LEEDS

I agree we are the only club in the country they is operating on a profit and debt free. What more do some of you want to be 200 million in debt and going bust again? I for one don't want that to happen. Also when the financial fair play kicks in and with the stadium being re developed and being a one city club and the third biggest where will they put us when we are bs k where we belong. Stop the negativity and look at the bigger picture Super Leeds.
Agree0

I agree -Bates and Grayson out. Nunez to be our first choice keeper.
We should be looking at bringing in some billionaire and Martin O'neil, then we can get all those mediocre players that have been flogged of by the club over the past decade back.
Agree0
Disagree0
Not sure what the get them out response is about, but it is refreshing that there are some sensible Leeds Fans out there..we do have to be patient, we have no endless pit off money and yes Bates will sell if we get to Premiership, but thats what he is about, he is a business man. If we get up there and an abramovic type comes and buys us everyone will love him, we have to stick with him Remember when he bought us we had been owed by ever mobster from the north of England and they all took a piece of Leeds with them and that was after Ridsdale, so MOT and we will get back there hopefully sooner rather than later Oldham Whites
Agree0
Disagree0
That's the most sensible comment I've seen on this site
Agree0

I agree with what your saying aboout the bates and grayson thing. As for nunez and mccormack, mccormack is a decent player, nunez well i dont base my opinion of a player on a youtube montage lol
Agree0
Disagree0
Agreed. The fact that KB heeps Leeds profitable inspite of not owning the Ground and Thorp Arch may be things people forget. It takes a big whack of Leeds annual income.
Not sure I agree with the Transfer policy all of the time, or some of SG's targets, but hey, he's the manager and it's his neck on the line.
IMHO I'm pleased to see some positivity in this posting (not meaning to be disrespectful to any of the more negative views out there).
Agree0
Disagree0
Well said. The quick fix never works long time and if we have to sell to nick a few million here and there to progress and be stable long term, then the supporters ought to realise. They also have to realise ken Bates and Simon Grayson are privey to a larger picture than we are and they not going to tell us every 5 minutes what's going on.Any judgement ought to be done over a longer period
Agree0
Disagree0
All for patience. But Ken Bate didn't save Leeds, and anyone who bought us after Administration would have the club "debt free".
Bates is the only person who ever threatened the existence of Leeds.
Agree0
Disagree0
Schmichel said he didn't want to leave but he also didn't want to sign a contract. Only signed two year deal when he signed, Would of left for free next year like he did from man city and notts county. The right move by Leeds was to sell
Agree0
Disagree0
You're all idiots.
Ken Bates is poison to Leeds and has been to every club he's been at. Don't forget this is the man who said he'd liquidate the club without a shred of hesitation in 2007. This led to the series of events (all Ken's fault) that got us the minus 15 in 08/09.
- Ken promised to re-invest the Delph money in the re-purchase of Thorp Arch. This hasn't happened. Nor has he re-purchased Elland Road as promised but instead spent £7m of your and my money on the beginnings of building a hotel on the East Stand. Where's the sense?
- We do have wage money available. He simply doesn't spend it. UEFA recommend 50-70% of turnover goes on wages. We pay under 50%.
- Any money the club comes into is invested in useless infrastructure. Look at Chelsea - the club cannot expand its ground due to the hotel Bates built there. Billy's bar and Howard's Restaurant - both expensive, embarrassing failures.
- As Leeds fans, we pay outrageous prices through the nose each season. We have some of the most expensive season ticket prices in the country for Championship football played by free transfers.
- Bates will not listen to sensible offers for the club. The auditors this year valued the club at £50m. Ken's asking price is £90m
- Finally, and most cynically, Ken has deliberately deceived us all in the club ownership saga. Now we know the club was Bates's all along, guess what we don't know - thats right, the owners of ER and Thorpe Arch. WAKE UP ITS BATES He is systematically using the club to pay himself in rent.
Leeds fans - if you have half a brain, its so obvious we need Bates out

Well said mate totally agree, Ken Bates saved leeds united
Agree0

If as widely reported Leeds are investing several million in improving the east stand then clearly money is available to invest, unfortunately most of that investment is not going towards the playing squad.
Ken Bates didnt save Leeds. He took the club into administration then the brink of extinction and then regained control of the club through a complex financial slight of hand that meant the club would have gone out of business unless Bates proposal was accepted.
Bates owns Elland Road and has for a long time.
Its not unreasonable to hold SG to account for team performance. Pleased with 7th last year. I remember reaching the play off final under blackwell (with good strikers, poor central midfield and a s**t defence) and being optimistic about the following season. Leeds didnt address deficiences in the squad we could all see and 12 months later we were headed to league 1. Dont believe for a minute that Leeds will be in relegation trouble next season, the point for me is there is no room for complacency and sentiment. SGs signings on the whole have not worked and I havent seen anything yet this summer to suggest things will be different.
Agree0
Disagree0
I submitted the first post. Its ok you saying Bates is using the club to pay his own rent. When all is said and done he is a businessman that is what he does. His interest is in making money. LUFC is part of his money-making scheme. Do you really think Bates wants to lose this asset. He wants the football club to do well for his own financial gain. He will not let the club go into freefall. I beleive if we do make it to the premiership, the relevant investments will be made in order to establish the team in the top flight. If KB gives SG the money to make high profile transfers the club will end up in debt again.
Take Fernando Torres as an example. £50M for a striker that couldn't hit a barn door since his arrival and therefore Chelsea did not win the league. He was bought as a gamble. Much like our squad following the successful Champions League campaign. We bought everyone under the sun for high prices and high wages, however the club failed to deliver on another season in the champions league and therefore was left with a high wage bill.
What is wrong with free transfers, Schmeichel was free leading to over £1M profit. Luchiano Becchio was a trialist as was Somma. Delph came through the ranks earning us a fair bit of cash. Johnny Howson will become a Leeds legend. These player manage to perform at high standards at a championship level. Ken Bates obviously feels happy with what SG is managing to do in the free market and is re-investing the cash into factors in and around the club.
HE IS LAYING THE FINANCIAL FOUNDATIONS TO MAKE LUFC A SUCCESSFUL PROFIITABLE CLUB
How much profit do you think Man City made after they paid out ridiculous fees for players and their wages, while not winning anything of any value. KB could spend silly money for players but if we do not get promoted the club will take a huge loss
Agree0
Disagree0
Me again guys......A lot of you are saying KB has owned the ground for a long time. Isn't he then doing the right thing by making improvements to the East Stand? The improvements are being done following FIFA regulations so that when England finally do host the world cup Leeds can make a legitimate bid to host world cup games. Apparently there are also plans to completely rebuild the West Stand to give it equal capacity to the East Stand. Therefore bringing in more gate receipts earning the club more money. Giving all of you LUFC fans to stand beside in the terraces shouting the boys on.
I think you should re-evaluate your thought and jump on the KB & SG team and support Leeds United instead of moaning and groaning. We may only have free transfers but any player willing to pull on the white shirt deserves our support
Agree0
Disagree0
"We hate KB" "KB is the devil"
Oh give it a rest and join the real world. The only way this club is ever going to get back to the big time is by doing exactly what KB is at.
He's building income from sources other than football and unfortunately to do that you have to spend some money like for the Pavillion and the East Stand for starters. Yeah I'd like to see some great signings come in but if the financials aren't right and you're only taking a short term view then you may as well welcome Ridsdale back with open arms.
UEFA might allow you spend 70% on wages but that's far too high and 50% is far more appropriate to keep the club in good finaancial standing.
Remember KB bought the club from administration because he paid the most...where were your billionaires then?
This is a long term strategy and for me makes the most sense. Oh and instead of penny pinching go and buy a coffer or a pint in Billys or something from the shop and actually support the club.
I'm sick of all this negative rubbish from the short term menatality brigade.

The redevelopment of the East Stand is costing £3 million fact stated in construction press, so where some of the idiots get 7 million from is scary, BATES did save leeds, again fact and how he did it was in a business sense BRILLIANT, who cares if he owns the ground and is taking rent from the club for his own benefit, better to have a club to follow than not, so get behind the club there are no individuals at Leeds cos every true fan knows even we make part of the team

I have supported Leeds United for almost 40 years and that will never ever stop.
I will not be jumping on the support bates and grayson bandwagon. Our opinions may be poles apart, that doesnt make you any more a loyal or sensible Leeds fan than me. Bates is a liar and a crook and grayson is happy to tag along. I dont want a return to the ridsdale/oleary school of inept management, we all know where that led us (relegation to the championship), what you seem to conveniently overlook is Bates went one better and took Leeds into league 1 where we stayed for 3 long seasons. You say get behind bates and grayson, I say Leeds deserve better. I will be right behind whatever team Leeds put our and will cheer them to the rafters regardless. The difference between you and me is my affection is reserved solely for "my club" and not the crook that owns it or any of his apologists.
Agree0
Disagree0
Complete and utter crap. If your going to suggest that Bates saved leeds at least get your facts right.
Bates bought the club out of administration because Leeds major creditor (murky financial investment vehicle hidden behind a cloak of anonymity based in tax haven in the Caribbean i.e. owned and controlled by bates) declared it would only support a bid by the clubs previous owners i.e bates.
There were other bids for Leeds that offered much more than Bates however because of the stance of Leeds major creditor (bates) it was impossible for either of those bids to succeed. The reality is bates is a crook. He owned the club, put the club into administration when Leeds were relegated to league 1 and then through a gigantic act of criminal smoke and mirrors bought the club back of himself for a nominal fee (ensuring if anybody made a better offer the deal was doomed to failure).
You get behind this crook all you like, those of us with IQs over 10 can think for ourselves are capable of making our own minds up. Sick and tired of being told to "stop moaning and get behind the team" blah blah blah. I have been a season ticket holder for over 20 years and have no intention of ever giving my seat up. Just beacuse i dont buy bates bulls**t or think grayson is some sort of messiah doesnt mean i have a short term mentality, the opposite in fact. The short term mentality is bates and graysons strategy for the club. I would prefer to see Leeds progressively improve the squad year on year in a sensible manner without incurring significant debt to do so as well as investing in the clubs infrastructure, there has to be a sensible balance to that and i dont believe their is. I would be concerned if leeds were throwing money around like Leicester city are at the moment, we know where that leads too, however we seem to be at the opposite end of the spectrum scrambling around the free transfer market to put a squad together and that concerns me just as much. The reality is Leeds have invested far far less in the squad so far this season than we did last season. I am all for adding quality rather than quantity, I guess we will just have to disagree on whether Grayson has delivered on that promise so far.

Completely agree with the above post. Leeds arent we

I didnt like kb before he was at Leeds and dont care for him now but I think we are improving and I am glad we are not making big signings and paying silly wages. We should all remember that not so long ago we nearly didnt have a team to support.

Cast your mind back 7 or 8 years, Sam Allardyce and Bolton all free transfers or small fees, granted they paid more in the wage packet than we are currently offering, but dont say that getting to the PL is not possible doing it on the cheap, its what we do when we get there and how long we can maintain it when we do.
Still being told Packer who owns Channel 9 in Oz is wanting to buy the club, he is worth a couple of Bill, second time this rumour has surfaced from different sources (1 dodgy work colleague other some one very close financially to the Channel 9 camp)

really don't understand the Brown deal why didn't we give johnson a new contract who had the potential to get better and also good sell on value and by a 34 year old who wants one last pay day and no feeling for the club we are one of the biggest clubs in the country and should be buying young, hungry and proven championship players {Ed015's Note - johnson was offered a contract but refused to sign}

Johnson didn't want to stay, how many times do people have to keep saying the same things?
As for Brown, he's just the player we need, just wait and see.

Brown could be the one to give the experience and influcence on the pitch which has been clearly lacking - Stracan was just shy of 33yr old when he joined us look what his pressence did to the team

Brown a far better player than Johnson will ever be even at 34, and that's coming from someone who thinks Johnson was a very solid squad member

Johnson did want to stay. The guys got a great point. All Johnson wanted was parity with some of the others and he should have got it based on his performances. If u think Browns the answer give your head a shake pal
Agree0

Why keep a player who has to prove himself and doesn't want to stay in any case?
One thing Leeds defence lacks is experience and Brown has that in abundance.
And LEEDS are NOT a big club anymore, we might have a great ground, a good team and a large support, but until we GET back into the premiership we are never going to be a BIG club any more....
Agree0

Firstly, you say Leeds means nothing to Brown - he was born in Leeds and grew up in leeds mate.
Brown twice the player Johnson will ever be in a Leeds shirt. His passing was awful, shooting even worse and never really contributed massivley for me (was good in the air though).
Even at 34 Brown will have 10times more effect than Johnson - good business for me.

Everyone JOhnson would never have signed once PL teams started to take notice because of one goal against barsenal he can't tackle, can't pass and shots ever time he gets a chance where did we but him from, that right Northampton town brilliant player. To the numpty who says Browns a Leeds lad get your facts right. He's from Hartlepool and the thug is getting his last pay day in. If any of you watched leeds home and away you will know Johnson was one of the top 3 performers last year and should have been offered a better contract than what he was. Those of you who think Browns a better option than Johnson are deluded, particularly the one who thinks shot to goal ratios make all the difference in a midfielder. One of the brightest young managers to emerge in years at Norwich didnt hesitate to snap him up. Brown will spend most of the season suspended as he usually does.

Grayson is also looking at the possibility of bringing another former crowd favourite Alan Smith home from Newcastle but his wages have been a major issue.
Brown s arrival, however, is set to be the first of a string of a new signings at Elland Road with Grayson also keen on Sheffield United midfielders Stephen Quinn and Nick Montgomery.
Grayson wants Quinn to replace Bradley Johnson, who rejected a new deal this summer before joining Norwich City. He has also enquired about Montgomery and is willing to offer striker Billy Paynter in part-exchange in both deals (YEP)

Stephen Quinn (to replace Johnson) and Nick Montogomery in with a swap deal and cash (presumably if we want both) for Paynter. Quinn being chased by Reading, Swansea and (I forget) but is wanting to stay in Yorkshire. Monty has interest from QPR but with off the pitch matters it is becoming unlikely, Ward keen to get Paynter due to Striker shortage.

This deal was never going get past initial interest until after the Newcastle Pre Season game. I have from a very close source that Alan Smith and Simon Grayson wants to know what reception the Leeds fans will give Smith. Grayson was interested 2 years ago to bring him on loan. They purposefully booked the friendly at Newcastle, Smith got booed off the pitch and everytime he got the ball. As he went off he clapped the leeds fans and simon grayson shook his hand. Smith will play some part in the freindly at Elland Road, and if he still gets a bad reception, then Grayson will not even consider a deal, neither will Alan Smith. Thats how long off this deal is. But I know from a very close source Grayson is a big fan of Alan Smith.

Smith is on £55k a week. Newcastle offerd to pay £35k and Leeds offered to pay £15k which would give him £50k so he would only be dropping £5k
