We are apparently interested in signing Alexander Alvarado, an Ecuadorian U-20 international diminutive winger.

Could be good, if true. Seems to have impressed at recent U20 World Cup - most notably against Uruguay in the Round of 16. This was quite a feat, considering his small stature against a typically robust Uruguay team who were also one of the tournament favourites. His contribution in that match included earning two penalties, the first of which he told and scored to give his team the lead - not bad in such a high pressure match. Presumably he would be for the U23s initially.

Is he better than Clarke.

Not seen enough of him to be able to say how he compares overall to Clarke - but then he would not be being brought in to replace him for the coming season - the intention is that will fall to Helder Costa (or an equivalent player) who would seem very likely to be better than Clarke. However, I feel it is unlikely Clarke would have feared so well as Alvarado did against a very physical team like Uruguay. Also looking at a few highlights from other games in the U20 World Cup it was surprising how well such a small player did in the air. Twice only denied by really good saves.
