Chaps, food for thought, compare the starting XI in the 2006 play off final with our likely starting line up next weekend:

Sullivan
Kelly
Kilgallon
Butler
Gregan
Richardson
Douglas
Derry
Miller
Lewis
Hulse

on the bench were Bakke, Blake and Healy, no place for Creswell (injured?). Should have gone up but I feel this season's side would give them a run for their money.

Believable1 Unbelievable3

Cressy was suspended, got sent off in the semi-final against Preston, same with Crainy (sp) but he was no big loss really
DonnyLeeds

Agree0 Disagree0

Because of investment though the championship is a different league all together compared to 2006. Preston are league 1 now amd watford not brilliant although going up that year.

Ed 13 can you give a brief praise of what the Bearded one had to say in the program? {Ed013's Note - He gave reasons for player exits, talked about how long it has been since end of season and ticket prices. basically talking s**t}

Believable4 Unbelievable2

Cheers Ed. ( Hoped it would be his farewell) {Ed013's Note - He says next weeks programme will talk about investment}

Let's hope he isn't at the club to make comments about investment next weekend

He said fu=k all, in the programme. He just likes to make out he's pumping money in, by saying look what we've brought in.

Unfortunately I couldn't get to the game today, but I was wondering how the Leeds fans reacted to Diouf? Was he booed or clapped when he came on off the bench? Personally I think he could be a great signing. JG LUFC {Ed013's Note - He was well received and a lot even gave him a standing ovation, some boos though}

I think Neils pulled off a minor coup in the signing of diouf ! As did a Mr wilkinson long ago with a couple of certain signings remember a Frenchman (name I cannot say since he left us) a rough lout from the sowth and a little fiery red head scot from the skanks across the Pennines !! See where I am going with this lads/Ed !Hated buy all when they arrived at ER then well you lot call them what you like they were and still are except the frog! Our folklore so it goes to show with the right manager ANY person who has a past can change and be given a 2nd chance ( and we know Neil's is heavy on his cisalpine ! So you divs that boo hiss and the like ... Remember he until otherwise is wearing our proud shirt and the vitriol that's spat will be heard by all the players ,let's get behind him Neil and the boys ....all of them!! From the off and if it fails Neil can dump he at the drop of a hat as he on no contract as such!! Genius if it works hiccup if it don't !! To his corner ...he's one he'll of a player on form ....... Isn't a non-contract basically a trial? players can't play league games if they're on trial.

Believable0 Unbelievable10

Essentially he is registered with the club but there is no fixed term to the contract, hence non-contract basis, so the relationship between the two can be ended whenever.

Neil Warnock has revealed glowing references from close friends convinced him to take a chance on El Hadji Diouf at Leeds.

The pair were at loggerheads as recently as 2011 with Warnock, then QPR manager, labelling the Senegalese attacker a 'sewer rat'.

But a chance meeting led to the pair settling their differences before Warnock decided to offer the former Liverpool, Bolton and Blackburn bad boy a reprieve at Elland Road after he had been released by Doncaster.

"I met him about six or seven weeks ago – it wasn't a planned meeting, I just met him at a function – and I ended up having two hours with him telling him what I didn't like about him and him talking about football in general," Warnock said.

"I actually enjoyed the conversation and I made it clear where I felt he could be a lot better and I spoke to Mickey Walker in the meantime, a good friend of mine who was at Doncaster Rovers, who said to me that he was one of the best lads around in the dressing room.

"Great to have around, didn't shirk anything and was good with the kids. Big Sam [Allardyce] says the same. One or two people I have spoken to couldn't speak highly enough of him."

Just wanted to put it out there how ashamed I am by the moronic minority who booed Dioufy today, absolutley disgusted, I really hope Diouf realises that this is not the view of the majority and we are happy to see him pull on the white shirt, the guy is undoubtedly a talent and one of the best players in the league, we are lucky to have him in our team, he is the kind of player we have been missing and you can almost guarantee given the chance he will win us matches on his own this season.

For gods sake give the man a chance( so he has lost his temper on a few occasions, dont we all), some of you are absolute poison to our club and claim to be supporters, you guys dont know the meaning of the word solidarity, we are all in this together and need/must give our full support to these players and NW.

Glad he got a good little clap from the Kop at the end though.

Believable18 Unbelievable0

Y dont u shut up because ppl have their own opinions of him and leeds player or not hes a rubish role model from what hes done in the past

Agree2 Disagree25

Opinions or not if you are booing your own players you are a pathetic excuse of a Leeds fan.

Agree19 Disagree0

You talk about people being allowed opinions whilst telling somebody to shut up whey they say their own opinion? ... Yes I can see how that works ...
DonnyLeeds

Agree15 Disagree0

It's all about opinions on here isn't it? That is yours and you are entitled to think that way, personally I will get behind him and think he cpuld make a difference, will you be cursing everytime he scores? No, thought not

Agree11 Disagree1

He is a disgusting human. I am actually ashamed that he is at our club. He should have stuck to just playing at vermin clubs, look at his past.

Agree2 Disagree17

I was a bit annoyed by the boos he got but it is only a minority who did it. All teams have a small selection of persons and over opinionated supporters (like the second poster) I will judge him on the future as his past is shocking (not as bad as Barton, Terry, etc)

Agree11 Disagree0

Well said poster , class player and welcome at ER, first answer , you're an person, when at leeds games you cheer ALL the players , not boo

Agree4 Disagree0

You don't know what your talking about. In the mogern game you would be hard prest to find a good role model in football. They all jump ship at any given moment and i don't see you funding the right wing. How can you be a role model, if you don't believe in forgiveness. If the Diouf comes in and gets his head down and works his socks off for the team. I for one will be singing his name. The number one aim is to get out of this league and getting a lad like Diouf, could help make this happen. No footballer is whiter than white, so shut up and get behind the players.
mot4life

Agree6 Disagree0

If you support Leeds United, you support all players that pull on that badge, otherwise you aren't really supporting the club at all, I assume many of the booers will cheer if he scores? Which is obviously slightly hypocritical..

Is Bates' position becoming untenable? He is under pressure from all corners; The Fans are restless, we've been in agony for the last 2 months, and to let the deal fall thru now would be unforgivable. LUST chairman questioning wether not letting the deal go thru in club's so called 'best interest'. It's been all over the media and we'll be a laughin stock if it don't happen, this will turn even more fans against Bates.

I have to say the last few days I'm starting to become anti Bates; Whereas before I was on the fence. We are on the verge of an exciting new season, and we were facing the prospect of an exciting new era, and this man Bates is completely overshadowing it, get out Bates you've stripped us of our assets, now sell up and get of our club.

Believable2 Unbelievable17

How is he overrated? he is a top half premier league quality player there is no denying it and African player of the year twice dont forget yaya toure drogba etc are african and round about the same age. The only reason his wages are peanuts and he is in the championship is cause of his attitude its definately not down to a lack of ability. I'm guessing you're just in denile because you dont like the guy ( which is understandable ) but you cant accuse him of lacking in talent. {Ed007's Note - Yeah is goal ratio of 1 in 6 shows his quality! Ok guys I know things are hard at the moment with Santa clauses evil twin brother being in charge of our club. There is way too much negativity between fans we should not be arguin at a time like this we should be uniting if anything. This is mostly between wether LUST's comment are are true or not at the end I the day this is rumour site and as with every post I take it with a pinch of salt. At the end of the day we aren't Portsmouth who were so close to collapsing. We have a decent squad with a manager that will get the best out of them and have a really good push for the title. We will not do this by boycotting matchs or anything. Yes the money goes to ken but I don't care about that I care about supporting the team and being the twelfth man out there leaving elland road hardly being able to speak. Not a LUST member. I still believe they have the clubs interest at heart. Ken Bates as succeeded in one thing in dividing the fan base. This should never happen. I also believe the protest should go on off the pitch by boycotting merchandise etc. You have to hit Bates where it hurts and that's his pocket. They should give all loyal fans a watch for putting up with so much s... these last few seasons.. I`ll be first in line and I`ll let you know if they`re any good!

Agree5 Disagree0

The competition should not be for the players. They earn enough to be able to buy an Ebel watch if they want one. The competition would be better aimed at the fans. Over the season nearest time, down to the second, of the fastest goal scored by a Leeds United player guessed correctly by a supporter might have got a better response.
As there are 27600 seconds in the first 10 minutes and that not to many goals will be scored in that time I would consider that to be a fair competition. Odds of 27,599 to 1 to win.

This is quite clearly not a transfer rumour, not an INT tip-off about the takeover and offers no fresh insight whatsoever into life at Elland Road. However, I do come to this site far, far too often in search of those things and one thing never ceases to amaze and infuriate me – our view of our chairman.
Opinion surrounding Ken Bates remains somehow divided. For most, the man is one step down from the devil incarnate, for others he was and is our saviour – the white knight who rescued LUFC in its darkest hour. Please make no mistake, I stand with the former.

Ken Bates did not save our club. To view Ken Bates in any way as the saviour of LUFC completely misunderstands the man and his motives for purchasing the club in the first place. Let me be clear, Ken Bates has no love of LUFC. He doesn't care a dandy for the club, its supporters or its history. Nor does he care about its future. Ken Bates bought LUFC seven-odd years ago because he knew he could make a fortune.
At the time Ken bought LUFC, the club was around £30m in debt if I remember correctly. The vast majority of Ridsdale's wild excesses had been paid off. And while there were undoubtedly still issues to be addressed, the immediate problems were under control and the top flight contracts which had haemorrhaged cash were all either a thing of the past or at least coming to an end within the foreseeable future.

At the time Ken Bates bought LUC there were a great many English football clubs with comparable debt. Many of those club's remain saddled with those debts today yet continue to operate as viable businesses and enjoy the usual highs and lows of football. Debt does not in itself spell the death knell for a football club - or for any business in fact. It is also important to remember that whatever the debt at the time Ken bought LUFC that is not the amount he paid for it. He bought the club for tiny percentage of the debt – I think I've read £350,000 to a few million. When he bought the club, he bought the debt. He took on the liability for it. Although he of course didn't. The club was bought by a myriad of offshore businesses with random names, untraceable accounts and unknown owners. Ken was merely appointed chairman and given the task of running it as if it were his own business – which of course we all know in reality, it was.
And here is where those Ken Bates apologists must stop looking at him as if he were a football fan, as if he were one of us. We are fans. We want what is best for our club. We want the glory, the passion, the excitement.

We want that 93rd minute winner on a wet, cold Tuesday night that makes even the most tedious away performance worthwhile. Ken Bates is not a fan. He is not a fan of LUFC, nor is he of Chelsea, nor Oldham, nor any of the other club's he has dabbled in over the years. Ken Bates is not even a fan of football. Ken Bates is a businessman. Beginning, middle and end. He buys businesses to make money. It just so happens that football clubs tend to be the businesses he buys. And he buys them because he knows how to make money out of them. And when he took one look at LUFC those seven-odd years back, he knew he could make a fortune.

But making money does not mean a successful team or for that matter a successful business. What it means is buying the club for one price, eliminating the debt, selling those elements which are worth selling and then, when there is nothing left to sell, putting the business itself on the market – but this time, debt free. Back in the 1980s, in the days of red braces and mobile phones you needed a forklift to move, it was called asset-stripping.
The key issue then is eliminating the debt without any real actual cost to either the company or the owner. This you do by driving the company into even greater debt. But this time, you ensure the debt is to you. Or rather the debt is to another myriad of offshore businesses with random names, untraceable accounts and unknown owners, which unbeknown to anybody, are of course ultimately all owned by you.
If we think back, we must all remember that the point of LUFC's decline – the post-Ridsdale fire sale, the fall through the divisions, the sale of players even while in the Championship – all of it was to avoid one thing – administration. What then happens at LUFC? Ken Bates forced us into that which our entire decline was meant to avoid. However, now it was different. We were not in debt to the tune of tens of millions to a whole host of football and other creditors. We were actually in debt to the taxman, and a few other small and medium-sized businesses. But most of all, we were in debt to Ken's offshore tangle. This meant Ken could not only push LUFC to the very brink of bankruptcy by forcing the taxman's hand, but he could also decide the terms of our resurrection. He forced the resale of the club, and – through the power of a controlling debt – chose not the preferred buyer, but the only buyer acceptable. He sold the club to himself and in doing so eliminated the outstanding debt at a pittance of its actual value, giving creditors the option of a few pence in the pound or nothing at all. In a matter of years, Ken had bought LUFC with a £30m debt and sold it to himself debt-free while only paying a tiny percentage of what was owed. It was, in truth, a work of genius.

With LUFC debt-free, Ken has set about stripping away asset after asset. Every player with market value has been sold. And one of the great bonuses of LUFC is the constant supply of saleable assets. We might not have produced a superstar in a few years, but there has been a constant trickle of Waltons, Delphs, Howsons and the like. Players have been bought – or more likely signed on frees on two year contracts – and then sold midway through with the club claiming it could not allow a player to enter the final year of his contract and risk walking away for nothing – despite the fact we signed them for nothing in the first place. Every opportunity to exploit the fans has been mastered, manipulated and abused.
What has also been clear over the past few season – basically since we became debt-free, is that Ken has been moving towards his end-game: the sale of LUFC. That money which has been reinvested in the club has been spent on stadium redevelopment rather than squad redevelopment. Ken has simply been using funds generated by the club to add value to its own infrastructure. He has been improving the asset he bought for a pittance in preparation to sell at a vastly inflated price.

And so I return to my initial – in fact my one and only – point. Ken Bates did not save Leeds United. Ken Bates bought a business that was in debt, he eliminated that debt through devious means and all along the way has no doubt pocketed a very healthy annual return on his initial investment. Whether it is in the coming months or another few seasons, Ken Bates will sell Leeds United. Not because he has to, not because of LUST and not because of fan hatred or adulation. Ken will sell Leeds because that was always his intention. He bought something, improved it – by clearing its debts – and soon he will sell it. There is no love of LUFC, its fans, or even of football. This is simply a business transaction. It is the same business transaction that Ken Bates has carried out with numerous clubs over the years. The only difference is this time he really hit the jackpot. With LUFC, Ken is going to make tens of millions – just like he always knew he would.

Well said. I always said if we the fans wanted to know the end of this fiasco we should look at Chelsea to see how we would turn out. I take my hat off to you on this point and you have a brilliant mind. Well done sir.

Best post on any site ive read. all my feelings expressed. had a business that i subbed to who lost over 10k to bates admin a few years ago and the guy took to drink never the same bloke a real human cost story of bates. i lost nothing but saw others lose plenty. good blokes down in the dumps with families. so for those who think bates save us get a life or a gf/bf the man is a parasite. best fans in the world demand better

Hate to say it but you've hit the nail on the head their. We need a football loving chairman to come in, someone who is a business man but loves the game as well, but you don't find too many of them in the game (in fact can't even think of one off the top of my head).

How long did it take to write? About 40 mins. Which is why the figures and dates are a bit vague. Sorry...it was Friday night, I didn't have time - or rather couldn't be arsed - to dig out the correct dates and figures etc. So sorry about that. I was just a bit annoyed at reading again on here how KB had saved us.

Most of that statement reads well and true. What do you mean about eliminating the debt via offshore companies? Using offshore entities doesnt make the debt disappear!

Excellent post that really has KB down to a T, you sir are not stupid. {Ed007's Note - That was a good read steveads.}

Still a good post what ever data or corrections. True to the point. Keep it up and get on the board at this great club.

The person who thinks the debt did'nt 'dissapear' should look at the fact that only a pittance was paid to the people who were owed money. He ran the club by mortgaging assets (The players i.e.delph) to build his corporate facilities in the hope Grayson could get us to the prem.div. the plan backfired and he had to sell to pay debt incurred. We owe this man nothing he has drained the life out of the club the fans and insulted us for ever questioning his methods. He will walk away with £50m. or more in his pocket for nothing. He should be ashamed to call himself a football fan.Hope he does'nt have time to spend the money and he can take it to HELL with the rest of his cronies and yes men, at least Sean Harvey seems to be redeeming himself at the eleventh hour. P.S. Anyone attend the meeting with Sean Harvey concerning policing at e.r.

Carn't wait for tomorrow, don't know about you lot but i'm dieing to show these new players, why we are the best supporters in the land. Lets sing loud and proud for the team and really show that we back them 100%. Then it would be nice once the players have left the pitch. To start singing why we want change at are club and who we don't want running are club. Then the players know we back them but not the tyrant.
See you tomorrow, loud and proud.

Takeover or not, I for one am excited at the prospect of a new season beginning and the possibilities which lie ahead. I live in the USA and have never been to a Leeds match, but have followed since the late 90s. For now, I'll settle for text update on my phone.

Support from afar,
Todd

Hi all,

Just going to give you my opinion on this takeover. Now recently the company I work for has just been taken over by a rival and during the negotiations there were several break downs along the way with both sides declaring the deal was off. This is common practice in the business world with both side basically playing a game of chess. When we were told at my company the deal was off with the rival company we were all told 3 days later that the deal had now been reached and contracts exchanged. I honestly don't think we have anything to worry about, bates has obviously decided now is the time to cash in.

I have said to myself that I won't believe anything take over wise until it comes from the horses mouth, I honestly think the takeover will go thru within the next few weeks, it's not a rumour I have no source no inside info, it's just my gut feel.
For now, let's get behind NW and the boys and do what we do best !
KB can suck my d!ck

From BBC Sport -

"Leeds United Supporters' Trust believe the deal to buy the club, which seemed to have collapsed on Thursday, is now back on.
The club issued a statement to say the potential buyers' period of exclusivity was over and they were open to new bids, but LUST chairman Gary Cooper believes there has been a turnaround.
"We understand there has been a change of position," he told BBC Sport.
"The deal is being discussed and they are looking to sort certain terms."
Cooper added: "This was a done deal some time ago and the issue is with the club, so at present it is delicately poised.
"We don't know what that sticking point is but we can only assume there was something that Ken Bates (Leeds United chairman) was not happy with.
"The buyers remain very keen and they are acting in the manner of a group wanting to get a deal done rather than wanting to pull out because of the time it is taking to sort."
Bates was officially confirmed as the club's owner last year following a buy-out from former owners FSF Limited.
It was initially revealed at the end of May that talks had opened between the Elland Road club and potential investors, believed to be from the Middle East, before the group was then allowed to start carrying out due diligence on 26 June."
