Evenin peeps. Lots of opinion on the CB situation. Mr Bielsa is not concerned, that's good enough for me, who am I to question The Master.

Well George, the thing is, the guy is a genius. He has obviously identified a lot of talent in the 23's, no coincidence he used them pre season. He knows what he is doing, trust him and smile and wave along the way.

I agree with George. The way we play, defensive midfield is a crucial role. Its also very demanding and prone to bookings, fatigue and injury. It’s not completely clear who is the number 2, Klich? It seems like three people Phillips, Forshaw and Klich for 2 places. Not sure who in the under 23s would be ready to move up for that position?

Billy bielsa will have had a good look at what he has and will be still looking within.
He has great self belief in his methods. so he's not panicking and he believes in the squad so far. he will use the best of the u23s to replace any of the 18.radz and orta put more resources into u23s last yr than the 1st team. they were coming in the bus load. i believe there is some real quality amongst them and MB sees it. MB came on board so must trust the owner and his team. that makes me trust them too. it all may change when this hard league takes its toll. that's when radz and his boys will have to keep their promises and keep the man happy. hope they're working on 2 more quality signings before loan shop shuts. us lot should stick with the manager try stay off his back whatever happens because if he don't do it this year, he gives us a chance. his coachings working wonders, have we got the class?

I can't really understand Bielsa's insistence not to go for another central defender (if true) . I don't believe we will get promoted with only two central defenders in the squad. Coops is already injured and Pontus is bound to pick up a suspension on the way. That leaves us having to rely on Ayling who would provide good cover but is much better in his natural position (and suits Bielsaball) and Berardi who can be reckless at times. Bielsa can be forgiven for not knowing the demands of the championship but surely he would take advise from his staff on this one.

Down the pints, 3-1 to The Whites.

MM.

He is well known for being stubborn, so that seems to fit and he seems to have a very broad view of who can do the CB role. He thinks that Pontus, cooper, Shaunessy, Phillips, klich, Ayling, Berardi and a few of the under 23s can do the job. To us, it seems a bit “loco” but who would have thought we would employ a coach who sits on a bucket! You wouldn’t catch Steve Evans doing that!

23 Aug 2018 19:20:00
Can't understand why we havnt picked up Robert Huth on a free, his experience would be of great benefit in the squad.

23 Aug 2018 19:27:59
Or Pennington, who knows the club and really seems to want to come back. It seems to come down to the fact, he doesn’t want another CB!

Kray Huth was detected dining in Leeds recently. Wondering if he joined on a secret trial?

Surely the time is right to give Shaugnessy a run out. He has played at the back already and not let us down. He has the idea and the ability to pick a pass and to play out from the back so come on Bielsa, give him a go.

Believable5 Unbelievable1

23 Aug 2018 19:07:27
Think you’re right Leodis and Bielsa seems to speak well of him. He didn’t have any pre season, so he has been cautious about using him and interesting that he didn’t use him against Swansea.

Agree0 Disagree0

24 Aug 2018 13:12:11
I can only imagine it is to make sure he is fully fit. If Bielsa doesn't rate him i imagine he would be out on loan by now. I see him taking the Phillips role.

I am still not convinced we are promotion contenders. The squad is too small and lacks quality in depth. We have beaten teams who were supposed to be promotion rivals but everyone, including Wigan, are beating them. We struggled against Rotherham in the first half and were definitely second best against Swansea - fortunate to come away with a draw. Its interesting how the mind set changes. Not long ago the majority of fans were saying Cooper wasn't good enough, now it's a big blow he's injured. We are not strong enough at centre back yet. Cooper was back to his old tricks against Rotherham with a horrendous mistake which should have cost us a goal. Phillips came back down to earth with a bump against Swansea. Not convinced with Harrison yet and Baker has something to prove, Bailey Peackock-F. produces some very good saves but then makes elementary errors - a sign he is still on a learning curve and needs more time to make the grade. I have a feeling that whilst not as bad as last season we may not have the quality in depth to make a sustained challenge over the season.

23 Aug 2018 14:33:54
Agree Hess 100%.
The diff is. We got a good manager.
All we need now is only for the owner to finish the job and loan a damn good centre back or two an we right!

Agree2 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 14:51:23
You always bring a fair, reserved and cautious view to the table Hessian and that is no bad thing. It’s always easy to get carried away with early points and a good position in the league.

The difference this year is Bielsa and still too early to judge his effect over a long season. I still think it’s too early to make a confident judgement. Even one top quality loan before the window closes could make a big difference. Also the next three league games provide good tests, Norwich away, a team we need to beat, if we want to be up there, Middlesbrough, shaping up to be one of the challengers and then Millwall, always a potential banana skin.

Agree2 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 15:30:08
The team, no doubt due to the Manager, have exceeded expectations up to now and long may it continue. But like you Hess the strength in depth is worry. It has just been on Radio Leeds that Cooper and Jannson are out on Saturday so a make shift defence for another tough away trip. I really hope we bring a bit more quality in before the window cloeses, especially a Centre Back as I would hate to see us struggle due to not speculating a bit.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 15:33:28
You have to bear in mind these are Championship players and will make mistakes more frequently than Premiership quality. I do not understand your comments on Harrison and Baker - they have hardly play but both looked lively if not exactly at match peak - which will come with more playing time. There is very little to choose between any team in this division so there will be weird results week to week and less consistency. Have faith.

Agree4 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 16:09:33
I think I agree with just about everybody Even that the new guys have not instantly impressed but that's just it it they are new guys in a new team, playing a new style with a new manager. I believe as they bed in and they get more playing time "Things can only get better". With the caveat, more players would help.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 18:12:33
Harrison and Baker are yet to prove themselves precisely because they haven't had much game time. They could turn out to be good or not so good. It's these sorts of unknowns that make the our promotion prospects very uncertain.

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 18:19:28
Well said Hess, the problem I believe we will face is simply lack of bodies as we spent so much on so many players who are mostly now transferred out or loaned out .
Pre -season we have dithered on coach and players there have been some decent deals on championship players apart from Douglas we seemed to miss the boat .
Tues night not having a c/ b fit the field is just shocking, I'm beginning to get the real hump with AR .
Early signs are add 2-3 players and we could be in for a chance at top six, but I fear we won't.
One thing to add was Beradi on Tues if you watched him, played his heart out for the shirt .

23 Aug 2018 19:09:20
A great post Hess but I've highlighted these points already and been told I'm too negative. I firmly believe radz thinks the manager he's got is job done. Radz has failed to invest. This league is for the taking. As like last season soon enough we will be figured out and we've very little squad wise for plan b. Already 4 games in and we are threadbare at the back. It also looks like we are short on strikers if we lose either bamford or Roofe what have we got. Radz spent around 5 million which leaves a lot out of the reported 20 million on the shelf.

Agree2 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 19:55:41
Since we returned to the Championship we were in really good positions come January under Grayson and Monk, but the owners at the time failed to invest in the squad and we missed out on the play offs which looked both times to be well in our reach. I hope that if we are in the mix this time Radz backs the Manager because as Wex says this league is there to be won. That's why I would like to see two more come in now as several others on here have said as well.

23 Aug 2018 20:16:47
Wex Well expressed. A central defender and striker even if journeymen so long as Championship quality wouldn't go amiss.

Saturday Team:

BPF
Ayling Berardi Shaugnessy Douglas
Klich
Roofe Saiz Hernandez
Bamford

A little unfair to move Roofe out of position, but nobody else has impressed enough to play the wide role. At least with this we keep two active goalscorers on the pitch!

Dropping Shacky an act of lunacy.

Well he is “ el loco” got a sneaky feeling he will have Shackleton on the bench Saturday and play him against Preston!

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 12:58:46
George: Where does Shackleton play though? As far as I'm concerned there's only 'cb' 'cdm' and 'winger' positions for stake at the minute? Potentially try him on the wing?

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 13:40:52
All positions are at stake due to a long season. Don't think all posters appreciate we are going to play numerous midweek fixtures. Every player needed. I'd like to see Shacky play right midfield or right wing. Way he got to that byline was great. Can see him doing that all season. I'd drop Alioski and play Pablo on left. Give Ayling rest for Norwich but ultimately Ayling and Shacks on right could be too hot to handle for opposition. With Harrison and Alioski on bench there's squad depth in midfield. Would like to see another central defender added if nothing else.

Agree5 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 13:52:10
Shocking as this may be to you George but I agree 100%.
I like what I've seen of Shackleton so far and think his energy out wide could produce a very potent partnership with ayling longer term.

23 Aug 2018 14:44:56
Right idea with Shakelton, like the idea of him on the wing, but not sure if Bielsa will go for that on Sat. Might depend on whether Pontus is able to start and the knock on effect. If on the bench on sat, he should go with the idea against Preston.

Agree George. Shackleton for Alioski as he gives the team so much energy. He looks like he can run all day and can pick a pass. As for moving Roofe our wide, no chance. You don’t move a striker out wide who’s been scoring regularly no matter how much you’d like to bring in Bamford in.
Not sure about the keeper situation as haven’t seen much of Blackman so can’t say he’s the better option, we’ll just have to leave that like everything else to Bielsa.

Thumbs up from me George. Think the lad would do well in a wide attacking role!

Agree3 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 15:58:28
I think Me Bielsa will tend to pick the same starters week on week whilst they win and show energy levels to meet his approach. When team loses or individual commitment levels slacken he will make changes to the starters or as on Tuesday during the game to rectify the issue as he perceives it. One thing about Mr Bielsa is that he is not afraid of shaking things up and making changes that he believes to be right. He is not a ditherer and will not tolerate 100% commitment on the pitch. That inevitably means some degree of rotation during the season.

On a separate note, he seems to favour players that can operate in more than one position/ role as that makes his team more fluid and adaptable in a game.

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 16:15:08
It's really a good feeling that we are debating who is the best for a role, and can't agree. As opposed to just plain "drop him he's rubbish" MB has the managers - good - problem a choice of permutations with a feeling that they will all work and one is not necessarily weaker than the other. Having said that it would be nice to bring in a new CB.

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 17:28:34
Think its right in saying Bielsa wants players to fill in more than one position so there is more fluidity in our play. However i think he has three or four players he sees as playing a vital role and as long as they are performing will be in team. Roofe in my opinion is one of those and as long as he keeps doing his job he will keep his place up front. Bamford will get his chances no doubt but he may have to wait a while. Think Nessie will be in the mix in a couple of weeks as he did miss a bit of training. I am quite happy with the players we have for the style he is playing. Would obviously like to see a couple more signings as like most i think the depth of the squad could be better. Bielsa obviously has his own vision of how players will fit in so am happy to leave it with him at the moment. As for us crashing and burning let's cross that bridge when we get to it and enjoy the moment and the football because we actually play football now. Onwards and upwards.

Agree2 Disagree0

23 Aug 2018 17:37:32
Leo You're right. It's called a good problem to have from Bielsa's perspective. Recruitment and management much better this season than in a long time. I just hope Radz makes at least one more quality loan addition over the next week because we ought to be pressing home our advantage not just sticking to what we have. Villa are going for it. We should try match them. Ideally I'd like to see 2 new faces. Central defender and defensive midfield back up to KP.

Team selection for Saturday shall be interesting. Certain players need dropping, others resting. My team would be Blackman Bera (RB) Pontus Nessy Douglas Phillips Baker Shacky (RM) Pablo (LM) Saiz Roofe. BPF had to go, bring in Nessy, hopefully Pontus fit, rest Ayling, switch Bera to preferred right back, tell Shacky to play right midfield, drop Alioski put Pablo in his place, Phillips keeps place in front of back 4 because he only played half hour and you hope he plays better, rest Klich for Baker with eye on Tuesday. Simples.
