I taught this way from day 1 over here. Amazing to watch a confident defender chasing a ball towards his own goal line turn across into the penalty box and pass.
It's how you learn to control the ball in the other third of the field.
Easy to do with kids but I get the nerves and the risk. It's simply we've had too many players who haven't practised it enough in our back line.

I can remember first watching us play like this under Bielsa and seeing the mistakes being made and the nervous reaction of the crowd. Saw the same a number of times with the under 23s as they tried the same approach. Fast forward to the end of this season and I don’t remember as many squeaky bum moments. Practice makes perfect, the squad is comfortable with the approach and skills have been improved. The addition of White and importantly his presence in every game has also made a big difference. IDone well it’s a much more reliable way of keeping and moving the ball as well as pulling the other team out of shape.

Hoof ball has a very good chance of giving the ball to the opposition. If they don't have the ball they can't score. Hence the phrase, 'keep ball'. It really is as simple as that.

I made the comment in the context of the champions league game last night where totally unnecessary fooling around with the ball initially almost cost City a goal from the start + THEN DID COST Real a goal moments later.

Both instances were totally avoidable had the ball been played normally .

That is the context I meant it in.

Simple mistakes and now it has cost Real a champions league spot, thsts what I meant .

I never said a word about hoof ball or Leeds, I said it about players playing silly passes with each other+ the keeper whilst being pressed by strikers .

Chris Chris i couldn’t disagree with you more, for every mistake or bad game or goal conceded from playing this way I think teams win more . Look at city they won the game and have won the league a couple times, Barcelona and have won multiple leagues over many years playing this way same as the Spanish national team won many tourneys and Leeds won promotion by 10 points playing this way.
