Perfect timing for a defeat. Last night will bring them back down to earth with a bang. It will show the management we need more depth and it will fire the lads up for Friday and make them want to prove a point against the Smoggies. Cup distraction out of way for me but others like a good cup run me personally like a good run in the FA cup but would rather win a league game than a Carabo cup game so it's one less distraction imo.

Thing is tho Martyn, how many times will we change 9 players for a league game? The lads that didn't do well will be fine when they get a chance in the first team.

We don't staff. I'd rather have a run in FA cup than carabo but saying that I'd rather go out of FA cup too if it means we are stronger in league.

Agreed, I love the FA cup and hope we'll be in a position to play a reasonable first 11 in it.

Great point AL, very rare that we or any team changes 9 players in back to back league game so the cup wasn't a fair reflection. Preston are a good side and fought well last season. Shows that we do only have about 13/ 14 first team players as it stands, whether bielsa can make that into 18 i'm not sure. But the point still stands that even with 3/ 4 of our best players out against Norwich, we won 3-0. those 3/ 4 for me would be cooper (never thought i'd say that) , Forshaw, dallas, arguably 1 more as I expect one more to come in.

I'm not worried about Tuesdays result, however if we can't beat boro or at least geta good result ill be concerned, as rotherham, derby, and stoke are turning out to be struggling for results anyway, and the only good team we've played is Swansea. Be a real test this, a lot of the weight is on saiz, Pablo, roofe, and aylings shoulders now.

It seems every game we play is " our toughest test yet" so far we have passed them with flying colours, never mind that the teams we've beat aren't looking good atm, teams are there to be beaten, top, middle or bottom of the table. Bring on the smoggies.

Just got back from the game, not sure my spell in Leeds is bringing the team luck and I have a ticket for Friday!

Positives from the game,

90 mins for Pontus and Dallas and match time for others who we are going to need.

Better to lose this kind of game in a cup and not the league.

Good for the coaching team to see what some of these championship games can be like.

Didn't get any bad injuries or red cards in a game very close to bubbling over at times against a pretty horrible Preston side. Although Pearce was hobbling at the end.

What was disappointing was that the fringe players didn't grab the opportunity. Harrison showed touches as did Shackleton. Roberts looked like he needs to play regularly in the under 23s to get some regular match time. Dallas and Shaunessy just off the pace of the game. Also despite bringing on Saiz, Klich and Alioski with time, we couldn't get control of the game or create enough.

It showed how important Hernadez, Douglas and Roofe are to this team.

I hope it was just one of those nights, absolutely nothing went right and we had no luck . Better for that all to happen in the thingeymejigcup!

Firstly let's say we'll done to Preston, pressed us way quicker than any other team have this season (especially the first 20 mins) . clear to see after tonight's game that the squad needs more depth, shaunnesy isn't ready for championship football just yet and maybe a loan to a league one side would have been a good move for him this season, Baker and Harrison are still learning the game and don't quite look up to it at the moment. anything happens to saiz or Hernandez and we could have a problem, most worrying thing for me is Bamford, some will say he's still getting match fit but he looked nowhere near good enough to me tonight, at 7 mil maybe rising to 10,even if only 80 percent fit I would hope for a lot more than he's shown. I hope he proves me wrong but I would be gin smacked if he gets 20 this season.

Preston looked like it was their cup final, worked very hard and were at us all the time. In that sense it was a good training exercise and we couldn’t deal with it.

Don’t think we could afford to loan shaunessy out, but he is definitely rusty, had no preseason.

To be kind to Bamford, nothing came off last night but remember that Roofe had lots of games when the team played badly and he looked awful.

The international break comes at a good time, two weeks for recovery and a chance for Bielsa to work with the fringe players who hopefully won’t be away on international duty.

Middlesborough game becomes even more important. Need to bounc back and show we can learn from that type of game. Middlesbrough can be a more skilful version of Preston, only conceded 2 goals so far in the league, so it’s going to be tough!

Also great test for Bielsa.
