If we get promoted, I think whatever our opinions on Meslier are, the majority realise we need another keeper, as Darlow is not the answer. So, with Newcastle reportedly wanting Trafford from Burnley, we could go for Pope from Newcastle, he is 32 years old so a lot to offer yet, and he has plenty of PL experience. If we got him and Meslier stays, the best man gets the shirt, and bringing in a quality keeper could do Meslier the world of good. Thoughts?

Think he'd be lower on my list than some. Yes he's 32 but for me he's not a young 32. He's had knee surgery and more than one serious shoulder dislocation, which would have my alarm bells ringing, particularly the shoulder stuff. Misses too many games because of that and you wonder if there'll consequently be a performance decline earlier than normal with keepers. There's a deal to be done at the right price, but not one that Newcastle would probably accept.

My list would probably look more like:

Livakovic (Fernerbache)
Kelleher (Liverpool)
Ramsdale (Southampton)
Pope (Newcastle)

Livakovic is excellent and Fenerbache only paid around £7m for him a few years ago, so double their money on him and he's 30, perfect age. Kelleher very close behind him, Ramsdale and Pope I'm less keen on, think they're for one reason or another not that big an upgrade on Illan for different reasons. I'd pay £15m-20m for Livakovic, £20m for Kelleher, not more than £10m for Ramsdale and less even for Pope.

Fair points Ealing, Kelleher would be a great signing, but maybe out of reach for us.

Great post EKB, lots of good young keepers out there many under the RB structure.

I’m still astounded we didn’t buy Viktor Johansson for a paltry £1million probably need £5-10 million to prize him away from Stoke but at 26tears old he would definitely be in my top three targets.

Only he and Trafford excel across all keeping stats but plus 10 goals prevented on shots faced is far and away ahead of every other keeper in the league.

We need at least two new keepers as Cairns and Darlow definitely not at that level required, Pope injuries are a concern, don’t rate Ramsdale but Steele from Brighton would be good or his understudy Rushworth would be a very good back up to Johannson.

Overseas and here in UK there are lots of keepers better than Meslier ( crocked worn out Pope or dozy meh Ramsdale please no)

However is Farkey going to double down on his ' Meslier best keeper in Champo' bs

And continue with Mesler as Leeds number 1 in EPL?

IF Farkey foolishly does! it will very likely cost him his job as Leeds will concede tsumamis of goals with Mes in goal that's a given.

So far you’ve got everything wrong about Farke this season and even wanted him sacked. What makes you, ordinary Joe Bloggs so cock sure that he doesn’t know what he is doing in choosing Meslier as his number one and I’m pretty sure that will be in the Premiership also.

Not getting the Rotherham keeper in the close season was a big mistake. As Baz says, there are plenty of good keepers around who wouldn't break the bank.

Again, it’s only a fan’s opinion that there are better GK’s in the lower leagues and it’s only your opinion that it was a mistake not to buy the Rotherham keeper Viktor Johansson. If he was that good he would’ve been snapped up by a club fighting for promotion to the premiership or a premiership team even and not by relegation fodder Stoke City!

Everyone seems to have the perfect response for replacing Meslier but i’ve read nothing so far that is even the slightest bit exciting or feasible.

Let’s get rid of Meslier and replace him with someone who is of lesser quality than him! That makes perfect sense.

As supporters OP we’re all of similar levels of genuine incompetence, but this is a harmless banter forum where the specific function of the site is to post our widely different but equally amateur views and opinions.

I posted previously I won’t post specifically about Illan as the professional in Daniel Farke says he’s good enough, and the transfer window is closed end of discussion. (Well maybe not)

But people still post about Mess both good and bad but that’s their prerogative. Just don’t get why we cannot simply agree to disagree, without being derided as either ridiculously positive or negative about our young keeper.

Illan or club officials don’t read this site so what harm is there, in reality we’re talking about people not accepting another’s posters right to a different opinion.

People can choose to ignore posts or reply, what should not be allowed is for people to be cancelled or put in stereotypical boxes, just because they hold contrary views.

Berm protects Illan everytime (great) but then attacks people that criticise Illans errors even when he perpetually criticised KP and Bielsa…well indefinitely really.

People must practice what they preach, (not aimed at you OP) but the fact is despite his improved displays he still rates minus (0.7) for expected saves to make where Trafford and Johannson are both plus 10 goals prevented.

Now one plays behind the best defence in the league and one behind the worst. That is purely based on their individual displays over a whole season to date so statistically (only) they’re both performing specifically better than our own keeper.

Yes, Keeper is the toughest position in any team but thems the breaks I said buy a new left back for next year and give Firpo a new (Dallas role) contract as he is still weak defensively.

If people want the whole debate to stop on our keeper they can either stop posting entirely good or bad, or simply accept and respect differing opinions.

Each peeps points of view on Meslier crystal clear.

We shall however very soon

see how the LUFC Number 1 gk place actually plays out
in this forthcoming summer transfer window recruitment and departures

and also next season on pitch in performances.

Very telling stats as ever Class on Meslier, Johansson amd Trafford ?.

26 Feb 2025 16:44:41
Fair points Class. OP, Meslier aside, my point was that we need another keeper for next season as it seems Darlow isn't the answer going forward. So let's sign a good one who can battle with Meslier for the shirt.

Got no problem with folks making their point of view Class and as I repeatedly said before i'm not here to change other’s opinions and I’m certainly not looking for a punch up.
I’m just here to provoke a good response to ask why the majority want to get rid of Meslier in the summer and replace him with who?
So far from what I’ve read i'm not convinced by anyone’s reasons or suggestions.
I can definitely be open minded about it and I’m waiting for someone to convince me, hearing trash comments like he’s got bozo genes doesn’t interest me, I want to make intelligent discussions about our football team, I’ll leave the wise ass and derogatory comments to others.
Im very serious about Leeds United, perhaps more serious than I should be, if posters on here think my posts are too heavy then perhaps I should look for a different forum to discuss?

I am not sure because I haven’t spoken the Mes, he may read it he may not but as a Leeds Fan I would think that any player would he look at all things Leeds and including this site and many others, so just put yourself in his shoes reading all the bad post what / how would you feel pretty ? that would put you off at some point. So let’s be positive from now on just, just in case he’s reading it.

Wonder whether Elia Caprile would consider coming back to Leeds - never got a look in here but seems to be impressing in Italy - currently at Cagliari on loan from Napoli with option to buy. Was on loan at Empoli last season and played their last 23 league games - conceding just 27 in a team that finished just above the relegation zone. Said to have a good command of his area, quick reflexes, good technique and good distribution.

Not watched the stoke keeper much live this season but he may be a great shot stopper according to stats but does he fit the way Leeds play from the back. Starting with mes we work it back and forth waiting for the opening. Would Viktor offer the same ball floor skills. Genuine question as I say not seen him play often.

From a quick google, it seems that Rotherham fans rated Johansson’s distribution as poor and felt that it was probably the reason another club didn’t come in for him until a relegation clause dropped the required transfer fee, from around £5m to £1m. Spotted just one Stoke review of his distribution (dated late September) , which commented that he continued to impress with the ball at his feet - so maybe the staff at Stoke put some work in with him over preseason on that side of his game. Guess we may get a chance to form our own snapshot judgement when they come to Elland Road on Easter Monday.

In the same way that would have had us believe (before he stopped posting about the matter) nobody was lining up to sign Mes, similarly, no one has pushed to sign Johansson, and there was no competition when Stoke signed him for the supposed bargain fee. Nothing is ever as black and white as many believe.
